Poster for the original Star Wars in 1977
Star Wars is in the middle of the culture wars. A new Disney + show, The Acolyte, is out and there's ample debate about whether the series is true to the spirit of the vision of George Lucas or seeks to wipe it out.
Here's a more pedantic question: Does technology advance very much in the Star Wars universe?
The Acolyte is set about 130 years before the events of the first Star Wars movie released in 1977.
The new show has the Star Wars basics: light sabers and space ships that can travel from one end of the galaxy to the other.
In the real world, technology doesn't advance incrementally. It advances exponentially. Yet, tech in The Acolyte is virtually the same as in the original Star Wars film.
The Acolyte's tech is far beyond what we have on planet Earth in 2024. But did it just stop?
Star Wars is fantasy, of course. It's not meant to withstand actual scientific examination. Throughout Star Wars, the audience can hear the sound of spaceships in outer space. But space is a vacuum and sound can't travel in space. For generations, Star Wars audiences haven't cared.
