Hey Everybody!
What's been on my mind lately? A lot of things really. Like needing a new job that isn't so hard on my body since I am dealing with a chronic illness, and supporting blue collar workers, and grocery store employees striking for better working conditions and pay. There is just so much going on.
If you watched the early seasons of Grey's Anatomy, in season two, the episode where the Nurses are striking and George doesn't / reluctantly crosses the picket line feels like life lately. Recently, there was a nurses strike at one of the hospitals here where I am. Now Fred Meyer's employees are on strike due to unfair labor practices, for better pay and all the things. Sunday, the unionized New Seasons Market stores will be striking for all the same reasons as the Fred Meyer employees, and then some. We are all trying to make a living where we find ourselves.
As someone who works at a grocery store, a lot of us are where we are because we need a job, and we would do better if better were available. Many of us have college degrees, and can't find work in our field, and going back to school isn't an option. I know for myself, College was pushed on me as the only option after high school, and that I had to go to college, so I went. I do regret that now, as it wasn't what it was cracked up to be. The fact that the promises of better job opportunities and better pay were all lies, and empty promises.
I came from more blue collar roots, both parents had jobs that were part of unions, one parent was in the trades. Now, my brother and two of my cousins are in the trades, making good money.
Working at a grocery store myself, I completely understand why the Fred Meyer Employees are on strike and why the New Seasons employees will be striking. That is why I did my grocery shopping today, at grocery stores that are on strike and will not be striking this weekend.
We all can't be Engineers and Doctors. The trades, union jobs and small businesses are so important.
