The episode opens with the scene that was shown in the preview at the end of last week's episode. Basically, two women go flying down the stairs of their home and scream, which grabs the attention of Conan, Mitsuhiko, and Genta, who just happen to be walking by. When they go into the house (without knocking, mind you), the women demand to know who they are, and one of them accuses them of being thieves. The three boys run away quickly, but hide behind a nearby bush and overhear the rest of what happens. It turns out the husband of one of the women is seen straightening a rug at the top of the stairs, and the two women start bossing him around and demanding to be taken care of.
Later, Conan, Mitsuhiko, and Genta are playing at a park. If you read my post from last week, I had assumed Ayumi wasn't going to be involved since she didn't appear in the preview. Well, it turns out I was wrong. She shows up at the park and starts talking about the family they encountered in the previous scene. Ayumi has all of this information because people in her neighborhood were gossiping about the family. Ayumi ultimately provides an "info dump" here, and we learn the two women (a daughter and her mother) are from a wealthy family. The husband worked for an insurance company that did a lot of work with this wealthy family, and he ended up marrying into the family. A lot of people assumed the man married the daughter just for the money, but as we saw in the previous scene, he's treated like a servant. Just then, the husband comes by with his arms loaded down with groceries, and he trips. The Detective Boys help pick up the groceries and then help carry them back to the house.
The wife and the mother-in-law berate and boss the husband around before they head out jogging. Just as the Detective Boys are leaving, a car swerves and hits the two women, causing a hit and run. While I found these two women to be extremely bitchy and annoying, they still didn't deserve being hit by a car. Conan, who has his skateboard with him, uses it to pursue the car and he asks the others to call emergency services. During his pursuit, Conan sees the car going through a car wash, and he's able to look in the window and see a female driver, as well as pamphlets from an insurance company sitting on the passenger's seat. I don't believe Ayumi gave the name of the insurance company that the husband worked for, but Conan jumps to the conclusion that the pamphlets he sees are for the insurance company that the husband worked for.
Conan's pursuit ultimately leads him to the hospital, where he starts picking up on and witnessing things that allow him to piece together the truth behind the case. Unfortunately, this leads Conan into some danger and into a tension-filled climax. I really can't say too much more about the episode, because I'd have to include spoilers. But even with what I presented here, you might still be able to piece together what the truth is.
I'm glad I'd set the bar low for this episode when I went into watching it. While it wasn't as bad as I was afraid it was going to be, it still ended up being a mediocre episode featuring the Detective Boys. The setup required the coincidence of Conan, Mitsuhiko, and Genta being in the right place at the right time to hear the screams. Then, in order to get them to the scene of the crime, the husband just happens to be walking past the park where the Detective Boys are at and he just happens to trip and fall. It just felt like the initial setup relied way too much on coincidence. And Conan's assumption of the insurance pamphlets being connected to the company the husband worked for, when he had never been told the name of the husband's employer, also felt like a stretch. And by the halfway point of the episode, I was able to pretty much guess the truth behind the case.
Oh well. At least the preview for next week's episode makes it look a little more promising than this one ended up being.
