Mompowerment Thoughts

Hi read,

How are you today? Is it just me or has October been jampacked?

I recently had a conversation with my good friend and accountability partner Emily Kapit of Refresh your Step (she's my go-to for resume and LinkedIn help). As we talked about how busy October has become, I mentioned I was disappointed in something I had said yes to. She shared her thoughts on what helps her decide between no and yes. I share my own strategies below and add her advice, which will definitely help me, moving forward.

  • Will this get you closer to your goals? You know what you want to achieve. How does this fit into your overall plan for the year? Quarter? Month? And remember that goals could be personal or professional.

  • Does this help set you up for the next step of your path? Will this build existing or new skills? Will you get access to more of the right people? Remember that sometimes a lateral move or project out of your usual scope can allow you to differentiate yourself in the future.

  • Do you have time to give this the right amount of energy and/or brain space? If you're like most working mamas I know, you're already pretty busy. Do you have the time and energy to take this on for the duration of the project?

  • What resources do I need to put in place to make this happen? Do you need to get rid of something else on your plate? Will you need more help from your significant other? Could you hire short-term help (e.g., mother's helper)? Is there someone on your team you can delegate to?

  • If this happened tomorrow, would you want to work on it? Sometimes you say yes to things that will take place down the road. You think life will change. This suggestion from Emily helps with saying yes or saying no because life might not get less busy in a few months and then what?

Which one of these will you start using to help you say yes more strategically? What helps you know when to say yes?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts,
Suzanne
