It's December and it's been another month since I last wrote anything relating to my blog. I thought I'd done a great re-introduction to my blog and gave myself a kick start into writing again. Sadly, It would appear that I was wrong.
I've had some great times recently being outdoors and seeing new places and have had many experiences. I've also been travelling a lot for work. Living in the South West, to travel anywhere in the UK takes a long time. Even if I were to take public transport; It requires multiple changes and planning to reach any major connection destination. But enough of the sob story.
What I have noticed over this last month is that I have more of a desire and passion to get outdoors and to become grounded again. As I'm finding things more overwhelming than normal. What I will say is that the increase in visual representation of the 'perfect' December on social media is adding to this feeling of inadequacy. What I do know, is that I am doing my best this month to get out as much as possible. The mounting pressure on the build up to the 25th of December is almost palpable at times. There is a general rush in public behaviour and the tolerance levels of people reduces significantly. In years gone by, I would always choose to cycle into work during the month of December. I would notice a significant build in traffic and more road rage and erratic behaviour in connection with this. My commute time on the bicycle would stay the same as I'd be able to follow cycle lanes and dedicated pathways. Whereas, if I was still commuting by car my journey time would increase by 15 minutes just due to increase in traffic. When I would arrive home, I would be de-stressed from my exercise and also a bit smug knowing I'd cheated the traffic.
So what else happens in December? There is great potential for some amazing adventures in the outdoors during this month. In the UK this is totally dependent on your geographical location and also the general weather trends. As an example, National parks such as The Lake District, Snowdon and the Cotswolds are known for having snow at this time of year. Yet, inner city places are less likely to experience this. In the South West we are less likely to see snow because of the way the gulf stream waves over the UK. Back to my point of seeing so many social media images of super cool adventures people are having. I currently feel like they are unobtainable as all I seem to be doing is dressing to avoid the cold as I walk the dog, then when I come inside i'm still wearing most of the same clothes when I get in - as it's so cold. I'm also frantically trying to get people's christmas gifts and also ensure i've seen all my friends on the lead up to Christmas to wish them well etc. all the time whilst thinking about how much money I'm spending and if I have enough fuel given that the prices for everything have skyrocketed lately.
Ultimately, I just think that I'm feeling the pressure of December and I'm not helping myself with any of my unreal expectations on what I should be doing. I need to have a mindset change and try to enjoy my Moments of Outdoors more. These small moments in my daily routine are what I crave and I should start to pay attention to them more often. I'd love to hear what you guys do to combat some of the winter blues.
