It was one of those homeschooling days where the pavement could easily hit the road. Both kids bombed their math tests in different units. We spent the morning going over both units. One child was very frustrated. I strive not to inflict math anxiety on this generation. I use Khan academy, traditional math books, hands-on math problems in real life, and the YouTuber TabletClass Math. The kids retook their exams with success.
We didn't end classes today until 4. Despite, an extra 3 hours in math, we were able to complete today's schedule. One of the reasons we are never behind we stick to the schedule. Our neighbors are over 6 weeks behind on lessons.
Days like this can make or break a homeschooling experience. However, if you approach the issues at hand with empathy, planning, and patience, you are rewarded with the light in your children's eyes that they have it. They both had individual attention for the lesson. Math is a very easy subject to be lost in. One skill isn't achieved, it is a domino effect.
As I have written my children didn't have the privileges my birth children did. As a parent, I was always focused on development across the board. Emotional, physical, etc. One of our children struggled to learn to read. I recognized early that we would be playing catch-up in this area. It took me a year to get our child to get to grade level plus 2 additional grade levels.
I didn't get anything done rather than showering and preparing meals today. We started the day at 6. Today was the best day to attend to these math tasks. We didn't have live lessons, clubs, or outside activities today. Was there balking and sulking? Absolutely, they are teenagers. However, they were given the option of a Saturday morning class this weekend. So, they didn't try to pull a coup d'etat.
