Proofreading and editing are essential tasks when it comes to translations. More often than not, after rereading some phrases a day or ideally a week later, clumsy syntax, hollow words and godawful spelling will jump at a mortified author like vicious Jack-in-the-boxes, cackling madly, feeding the good old impostor syndrome like nobody's business...
It's good to take a break from a text and revisit when less tired (ha!), or preoccupied (fat chance - have you been watching the news?) or altogether sounder of mind (welp). Let's say that I'm taking such a break right now.
Once again, it seems later than it is. The sun went down around 4 p.m., but it seems like it must be dinner time, despite that it's not even five yet. Seems like a good time to blog.
Today, incidentally, is St. Nicholas' Day. For the first time ever, we've taken the liberty to postpone this formerly so eagerly awaited and diligently prepared day, that always began with special breakfast (cookie cutter cut-out cheese, toast and apple slices, hot cocoa for kids and much needed caffeine for Mom, who had filled freshly cleaned shoes and decorated into the wee hours).
'St. Nick' never failed to show, leaving chocolates, bright red apples, nuts and such. He also left a letter for the kids. The jig has been up for a while now, and I have suggested doing only the sweets and fancy breakfast and lunch boxes, but no, the kids (22 and 15, bless them) insisted, so I buckled down, and wrote them something in gold or silver ink, every year. I love my kids, and they love their rituals.
This year? Well, my son is an apprentice now, and is working full time in a physically demanding job; my daughter has no less than 4 presentations to give this week, plus a test to write. We were all pretty beat yesterday night, and so I asked if it might be okay to maybe have St. Nick come a day late? And surprisingly, they were all for it. Nobody felt like shining shoes at 10 p.m. So I sat down this morning with my silver pen and wrote their note of love and praise with a flourish, then made 4 individual piles of marzipan and chocolates, shiny apples, nuts and such (mom, dad, son, daughter) that will go in the respective boots later on; then I went out and bought toast because we were out – I mean, how are you going to do do cut-out toast without the bread? I thought it might be nice to have breakfast for dinner, since we missed out this morning ;-).
This morning was gorgeous. It snowed, and everything seemed a little quieter than usual in the big city. The icy wind of the past week had let up, and the pup and I had fun playing on the big lawn at the park close by. It felt good to be out, for the first time in days.
Crafts have not been at the forefront lately, but I tried salvaging my Red Sweater (the one I call my Vampire Diaries Sweater in my mind, for I made it while binge-watching that beautiful piece of television). I had convinced myself the problem was the crew-neck (before the days of knowing my way around the short rows at the back of the neck). Sadly, it turns out the real problem wasn't the collar but the fact that it's actually a bit too small for me (for my taste anyway). Thankfully, I have a smaller-sized young lady living with me who was happy to take it off my hands.
That's okay. Maybe it's a sign? Maybe I need to get new red yarn and make one in a larger size for myself, while rewatching TVD? Hmm. I do have a bit of free time coming up in January. It's a thought!
Other than that, I still have a couple of Christmas socks to finsh before the holidays. This year, my husband (who doesn't really wear thick socks) to my surprise asked for a pair, because he liked the design of the vertical stripes so much.
His feet aren't exactly small and dainty! But since he never asks for anything, I'm happy to make them, in elegant black and heather gray (no pics yet).
So, happy St. Nick's day, if you're celebrating, and if not, enjoy the winter mood, such as it is, wherever you are. I hope it's a safe and cozy space with a hot drink and a candle.
