A movie about Napoleon with the great Ridley Scott directing and starring Joaquin Phoenix! Oh, I am looking forward to this one for sure.
*The MEAT* This is quite an epic story to stuff into a 2-and-a-half-hour movie, but they do a pretty good job of hitting all the important points. Now, of course this is a historical interpretation of Napoleon Bonaparte based on various books so there are a lot of *Questionable Liberties* the writers have taken here. So, there is a fair amount of criticism the movie has taken for it. But I have no complaints because it is a fascinating story about history and one of the men that shaped it and I wish it was more like a miniseries because it does go by quick.
*The PATATOES* Of course Joaquin Phoenix is great as usual here; however, this is not his best work, but even his average performance is better than so many other leading men. My only question is, does he purposely seek these self-brooding roles out or does he turn all his characters into that? Now, I must mention Vanessa Kirby plays Empress Josephine, the first wife of Napoleon, and she "Knocks it Out of the Park!". Kirby not only holds her own with Pheonix but outperforms him in some scenes. I was as impressed as I was surprised. Wow!
*The VERDICT* It has been a while since I've seen a *Good, Epic Movie* and "Napoleon" does fit that criteria for sure. Not great, not bad but good. The battle scenes were done very well, the musical score was perfect, and the direction was on spot! With the acting better than all that. And for all those reasons, I do recommend this movie for the theaters.
