As the systems of democracy will NEVER be, perfect, and, we try to, make it, perfect, and that, is where the problem, L-I-E-S, because systems are devised by man (humans), and, we humans can't see every perspective available, all at once…on the need to amend the voting process, written by an econ professor, off of the Front Page Sections, translated…
The presidential elections of next year, is affirm to have three candidates from the three political parties, and, the voters are once again, faced with "if we want to leave ourselves unprotected" again, and this time, we may be voting for the president who can't win HALF of the votes. And, this predicament, should NOT be the fate of the Taiwanese democracy, the three sets of presidential candidates, can't keep on evading to not tell the people their opinions on this serious, matter.
Back when the amendments were voted to switch from representative democracy to direct democracy, the rule of thumb was "majority wins", the candidate with the most number of votes wins. And, so long as there are more than three sets of candidates, then, there would be the high chances of a president being elected, who'd not gotten more than half of the, votes, and back in 2000, this had, already, happened before. The "KMT, TPP combo" that people are waiting on which had been a possibility, due to the two parties, wanting to, work together, before the deadline of formally announcing the candidacy on November 24th; and the end result, both sides wanted to work together, but the negotiations went, bust, this proved, how difficult it is, to negotiate, that to have the people decide on a president, of more than half of the votes, we need to rely on the systems.
so many different "voices" in direct democracy...illustration from online
On the perspectives of the parties, the "TPP, KMT Combo", maybe, it was, for the sake of raising the chances of winning the, elections, but from the angle of public opinions, it'd, reduced the race to only, two, parties. And, in this case, the results of the party gaining the most votes, is the party with more than half of the total number of votes. And, although the petition for Goh to run had passed, he'd decided to drop out, and, reduced the possibilities of a fourth candidate, affecting the outcomes of the election, and in the end, it still, couldn't, help the KMT combine with the TPP, for a two-party election, and, this made me believe even more, that we can only, improve Taiwan's democracy by amending the, constitution.
I'd spoken publicly about how the votes for the presidency and vice presidency should be a "two-round voting, with the absolute majority" winning. Simply stated, the two-round system voting is when all the candidates couldn't reach half of all the voter supports, we set another date for the two highest candidates, to vote on again, to ensure, that the elected, had, gotten the support of, more than half of the voters. And honestly, my suggestion, did NOT get enough response, those who were willing to discuss it with me, couldn't understand why as the amendment to vote for president directly only focused on the winning majority, and doubted that the various parties' organizations would only care for the win, to NOT place priorities on the systems of voting.
And, to change how the presidential election is run, this needed to be from the amending of the laws, not from the right of the president's, orders, but, the candidates still can't evade expressing, if they are in support of "two rounds of voting, the absolute majority" theories I'd, proposed.
The voting for president is combined with the elections of the legislators next year, and, the legislators from all the political parties, are all sure, that they will face the matter of amending the constitution to improve democracy, through popular votes. I hope that the candidates will, put the amendments for voting as a high priority, to allow public opinions to check the civility of the candidates.
If the candidates still played dumb, the news media and the voters, should NOT allow them to, slide. In the campaigning, the candidates must face the opinions of the people, to talk to them. The candidates should view the reforms of how the president and the vice president are, elected into, office, or at least, they should express their willingness to discuss this, subject matter, if they don't show any concerns, then, we the voters, will, note too.
Yeah, this proposed system would ensure, that the president is, elected, in a just means, but this means, that we would have to vote for two rounds, and, there might be the recounts requested, because NOBODY likes to lose, especially when the votes between the runner up and the third came too close to each other, and that would only be, wasting MORE of taxpayers' dollars, and, that's just, no good.
And yet, this is the problem, of DIRECT democracy, with an odd number of, candidates on the ticket, and the TWO-PARTY political systems primarily…
