A wave of propaganda, that's what we can expect. Tons of money was invested to produce fake meat and a profit must be made.
Fellow culprits are lazy, incompetent, or overworked journalists who report glowing stories without possessing any knowledge or critical notion. Here are a couple of dozen issues and questions they never raise or ask:
1. How much more expensive is fake meat compared to a good, nutritious vegan dish, not compared to dead cow muscle?
2. How much nutritional value (protein, minerals, fibers) gets lost when turning the plant-based ingredients into this fake meat?
3. Is the fake meat vegan or was animal produce used in the production? (Think of whey, eggs, fish, and plasma components.)
4. How much contact is there between the food, plastic, and metals, and how much contamination (micro-plastic, metal) is absorbed in the food?
5. How much energy and water were used compared to growing not reconstructed plant-based foods and what's the overall carbon footprint?
6. What kind of blocking of viral, bacterial, and fungal growth was used? What percentage of these antibiotics ends up in the food or wastewater?
7. Is the product's DNA tinkered with, destroyed, or partly destroyed? Destroyed DNA may contribute to the risk of cancer in the eater.
8. Does the wrapper warn that eating meat is bad for your health because of searing, pan searing, grilling, baking, braising, roasting, and sautéing?
9. Does the wrapper warn that eating meat is bad for your health because of the excessive salting meant to give the tasteless junk food any taste?
10. Does the wrapper warn that eating fake meat is bad for your health because you maintain a meat addiction and when the fake form is not available, you can easily move on to eat the murdered variety?
11. Does the wrapper warn eating meat is bad for your health because it places too much emphasis on eating refined protein instead of learning to eat a varied meal with much fibers, veggies, legumes, nuts, olive oil, herbs, mushrooms, seaweed, fruits, and whole grains leaving you mentally and physically satisfied for a long time and helping your intestines stay fit?
12. How easily can this food spoil, how much cooling or freezing does this need to stay safe (footprint!), and how does accidentally eating it spoiled compare to eating spoiled vegetarian food in terms of health risks?
13. Are there independent studies indicating if mass production of this will lead to less consumption of animal produce and what will be the long-term effects of this being sold on a mass scale, especially on deforestation?
14. How does your product relate to other fake meats previously and currently on the market in terms of price, pollution, health risks, waste, environmental and climate damage, and kosher certification?
15. How many rabbinic authorities have been asked to declare this kosher and how many have refused to permit this and for what reasons? Did the rabbis visit your plant and inspect every section, lab, and stockroom? The reported blanket rabbinic approval proves fake, we read elsewhere. Wow.
16. What kind of contract do your workers have with your firm and how many work nightshifts and how often? What return goes to the investors?
17. How do you market? Do you advertise? Do you pay for infomercials? What perks do journalists and publishers get when they visit your plant? Where do you plan to sell first, restaurants, supermarkets, or online?
Five years ago, when the fake meat hype started, I already wrote here:
So, this fake meat is bad for your health, bad for your diet, bad for your wallet, bad for fighting climate change, spiritually bad, and good hype for the meat industry. As a vegan, I see little reason to celebrate this news.
