Happy new year friends! If you have been reading my blog for a while you probably know I do not set new year's resolutions. Instead, I make goals for my birthday, which is in September. Even though I don't do resolutions in January, I tried something new that I want to share with you.
Back in the fall season I began writing out a list of projects or tasks I want to do over the winter. I often struggle with boredom in the cold and dark days, so I wanted a way to stay busy and motivated to get things done. I am sharing this with you so you can perhaps make a list for yourself. I'll share my list below. What I wrote is specific to me, but it includes some homemaking tasks, hobbies, and preparation tasks. Here they are in no specific order.
LEARN TO CROCHET
I can knit but not crochet, and I honestly don't have the desire to start making crochet items. But I want to learn because my husband's grandma died before finishing a blanket, and nobody in the family knows how to crochet. I have the most time to try, since I don't work full time like the others. My best friend and my step mom both crochet so I am sure they can help me if I attempt to learn on my own and get stuck.
KNIT HATS FOR FAMILY
I'll be honest, I can't remember why I added this to my list! My brothers don't need any more hats, my mom doesn't wear them, but maybe my dad and young step sisters would like some. Regardless, I can knit adult and child sized hats if I've got the desire to knit but no projects on the go.
KNIT BABY GIFTS FOR FRIENDS
Some of my husband's coworkers had babies last year, so I made them a few items as a gift. I would like to have a stockpile of knit hats, mittens, booties, and some other things that I can quickly wrap up when we are informed of someone having a baby.
BAKE AND FREEZE BREAD
I like having lots of sourdough bread in the freezer, since we go through cycles of eating a lot and none at all. Typically I bake 2 loaves at a time, but not always. I'd like to make an effort to bake consistently and always have extra in the freezer.
TOUCH UP WALL PAINT
This is a task that doesn't need to be done, but should. Our walls get scuffed and the paint chips, but it doesn't feel like a big enough deal to fix at the moment. But now there are scuffs and chips in most of the rooms, so if there is a day I am unmotivated to do much, this could be an easy task.
ORGANIZE SEEDS
I keep my flower and vegetable seeds pretty organized but sometimes the containers get messy. I use small plastic lunch boxes to hold everything, and then group the seeds together by type (root vegetable, beans, tomatoes, etc) in plastic bags. The containers are pretty full so I want to sort through them and see if anything can be condensed or even set aside to give/swap.
SEAL BACKSPLASH TILE
In May 2022 we had a terrible rain and wind storm that damaged our roof. Water came into the house and some of our kitchen backsplash tiles had to be removed to assess water damage. The tiles were old and cheap, and the insurance company had to pay to replace them. We ended up doing the replacement ourselves, and I got the tiles of my dreams! I am not kidding...I have wanted those tiles for a decade! They look like river rocks! Anyways, we put the tiles up in April 2023 but could not find the proper product to seal them. I'd like to look around for it and get it done.
WORK ON SECOND EDITION OF BOOK
I released my first book in October 2022, and hoped to write a second edition in 2023. That did not happen but it's ok. I have been making notes and listening to suggestions for what the second edition could be like. I also want to write a separate leader's guide, so that the book can be used for group study.
CREATE EMERGENCY BAGS
In 2023 my husband and I visited the hospital twice (almost a third time but I decided against it). This is not a lot, but more than we would like. The wait times are loooooong because our hospital is small, rural, and serves a lot of people. I am going to prepare some emergency bags that I can grab before heading the hospital, either by ambulance or one of our vehicles. I think I will assemble 3 separate bags (maybe more). One will be kept in the house and will have things like shelf stable snacks, a few doses of my migraine medication and allergy pills, empty reusable water bottle, small blanket, a few hygiene items, book to read, my spare blue light glasses, phone charger, and more. I'll make a second similar bag to keep in my car in case I get a call that my husband or other family member was taken to the hospital, and I'm not home to get my bag (these bags will be intended to keep us comfortable if there is an all day/night unplanned emergency room stay). Currently I don't have an emergency bag in my car, in case I get stuck on the road. So I plan to make one for that as well.
What do you think of this list idea? Is it something you might consider doing?Let me know in the comments!
