Comparison – Why is it such a big theme in society? Why do we tend to give it so much attention that we forget who we are? In an increasing-paced fast tech world where information is exposed to in seconds, it can become overwhelming where so much is given at once. It is understandable to appreciate the importance of useful information for education purposes, but getting to the stage where it becomes an opportunity to use precious time and compare links and data and opinions all on one social platform is not worth the mental-wellbeing of one's life.
With the times we are in, politics on the rise, fights in several countries, unfair treatment in certain sectors of the workplace, ill health on the rise; there is so much to complain or worry about; however, when we turn our attention to what truly matters which is how we are within and how that impacts how we show up in the world, it becomes easier to discern whether comparison should have made a way in your heart in the first place. We have to be intentional about our thoughts, what we take in and, above all, how we see ourselves internally and within society.
Comparison can be seen in two forms: (1) learning about an individual who is talented and gifted in a specific area and using it to influence or impact their community, and (2) leading to envy – "when we see a friend succeed and make things work, we smile and pat him/her on the back, but deep down, we envy them because they have made us feel worse about ourselves." – an excerpt from the book; Destiny by David Gibson. Seeing this statement should make us realise how dangerous it can be to entertain negative comparison; rather than celebrating one's achievements, we secretly go solo and start being hard on ourselves; but the question you should ask yourself is: is it worth your peace of mind?
What cure can we use to break the pride of comparison? Firstly; to look at your own life and celebrate how far you have come and appreciate your gradual achievements that are being made. This therefore enables you to celebrate others genuinely, without entertaining any form of jealousy or envy and being a positive advocate for those who deserve to be seen.
A song composed by Solo Artist Audrey Chamunorwa "It's Time to Shine" is a rich reminder for us to remember that everyone will have a platform to be celebrated, and whether it is now or later, you will always be remembered. When you have a great gift, don't hide it for fear of what other people will think about it; let it shine and allow others to see the great works that is happening, because this could be the turning point for them to avoid opening the door of comparison.
We have been through several seasons of wondering if life will ever change for us; rather, the thoughts we ought to consider is: how can I be of help to someone and get my mind off myself? Life is greater when it becomes "we" and not "me." These are some of the practical ways we can cure comparison and be more present with each other. No matter where you are on the journey of life, there is beauty in each moment. Learn to enjoy the present without the present make you focus on tomorrow that has not yet come. You are right where you need to be.
