If You Were Night by Mượn Thị Văn and illustrated by Kelly Pousette, published by Kids Can Press.

My father-in-law told me a story about how years ago he woke up in the middle of the night and found my husband (when he was a little kid) alone in the dark living room, upset. He didn't understand why the house was so dark, why his parents weren't up and about. My father-in-law realized that he didn't understand what it felt like to be in their house at night! It felt quiet and dark - and was scary. He took him on a little in-the-dark tour to show him all the places in their home and realize it was still comfortable and safe.

If You Were Night is all about the possibilities and unknown of the night -- what sounds float through the dark and what animals do to survive and play. Its poetic text is complemented by paper collage artwork by Kelly Pousette, which plays with depth, shadows and light to almost tease the eye, like at night.

Themes: curiosity, nature, wonder. Published by Kids Can Press. 🇨🇦. I borrowed this book from the public library
