The Hell Of Being Married To A Yes-Man

You might think it's easy being married to somebody who's so easygoing, such a people pleaser, that he never argues with you. Think again, says Katie Arnold-Ratliff! In her latest, she lays out the case against this dynamic — and offers some ways to fix it.

But first: On Friday, we ran a story by a mom who made a bunch of adorable toddlers cry with a botched Easter egg hunt. I asked you all for similar disaster stories, and I got a good one. Janelle wrote to us about her son's fifth birthday party, held at a local park: "One of the games we decided on required each child to tie an inflated balloon to their ankle. (I used curling ribbon to make it festive!) The children then ran around and tried to stomp on and pop the other children's balloons. The child with the last remaining inflated balloon is the winner."

So far, so fun. Except: "Well, I didn't realize that the kids would cry when their balloons were popped! So by the end of the game seventy-five percent of the children were running around, crying, with a piece of colored curling ribbon tied to their ankles!" Absolutely classic. This piece opens on a dinner-table standoff between Chandima Kelsey and her five-year-old daughter: "She crossed her arms. Pouted. Kicked the table. Glared some more through what remained of her soft, bouncy baby curls." Kelsey wondered where all this attitude came from… until she realized the answer was no mystery. Sounds extremely familiar to me personally!
