Because they're what??? 50s, 60s, they can't be adept enough, to handle the new technologies, is that it? Yeah, a lot of the older population members can learn better than all of you, younger "kids" out there, and yet, they're still having it hard, finding work again, because of the STEREOTYPES of old…off of the Front Page Sections, translated…
The members of Generation X are now finding it hard to find work, the employers mostly believed that the younger generations have higher plasticity, can learn to use A.I. and other newer technologies more fluidly, and, Generation X no matter what positions they are entering, can't beat the younger generations.
BBC report, that ageism had been the problem in employment for a long, long time, btu the major scale layoffs, the uncertainty of economical growth in the post-pandemic era, the speed to technological advancements, along with the growth-into-being of artificial intelligence, it'd hit Generation X the hardest.
says W-H-O, the elderly population can't learn how to operate high-tech devices???

Studies showed, that the older employees (ages fifty-five to sixty-four) with the middle working age employees (ages forty-five to fifty-four), are faced with the various stereotypes and misunderstandings. And this is where the Generation X-ers are.
Members of Generation X usually want to get to a higher up managerial position by switching jobs, but, with the reduction of the positions of these, also due to the baby boomer generation's delaying their retirement ages. When these positions finally opened up, the managers hiring are then, considering the younger generations of "aboriginals of the digital age" first.
Porter who advocates age-tolerance, is also a member of Generation X. He proposes, that Generation X-ers are more adaptable than popularly believed, that the employers often, are misinformed into believing that younger means, more digitally, agile.
tech-savvy in old age...photo from online
So, this is, still, stereotype at work, because of how the older populations are less agile in learning new things (as that's what we are all, socialized to think?), this is why these baby boomers are having it hard, finding work in today's companies right now, despite how they still all have the abilities to learn new technologies, they're still, screwed by the STEREOTYPES of being, TOO O-L-D to learn anything that's high-tech. And until the society get rid of this ageist belief about this particular group of people, there will always BE age-description, in the workforces, and, this is not good for the economy one bit!
