When I was five, I was content. I was living on my great-grandmother's farm. I couldn't see a life beyond the peaceful Eden. My world was very small, yet very wide. I spent my days learning to sew, make bread, and harvest the gardens. The milk weeds brought many Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies. The Phobe birds would be maming their Phobe calls. Cardinals came regularly. Raccons and foxes would come to raid the gardens. My cousins would come to visit in the late part of the summer. The babbling brook would run in the East side of the house. We would paly in the cool waters. My great-grandfather would catch brook trout. Our collie Shep would herd us from what he thought was dangerous. Shep was a gorgeous balck and white collie who lived to be 17 years old. Apparently, as captured in pictures, I was always making him sit and behave. So, I guess my lack of tolerance for dog that aren't well-behaved goes way back. Shep was a farm dog, not a house dog. All I have to is knead a loaf of yeast bread and I am transformed back to that old farmhouse with the yellow walled kitchen. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
