COUNTING ON FALL by Lizann Flatt and illustrated by Ashley Barron is a real treat for autumn and back to school. Each page is filled with questions and has the reader counting, guessing, imagining, and inferring.

I was surprised--some of the math in the book is a bit trickier than what we usually see in a picture book. It goes beyond "how many do you see?" and asks things like "Can you see several ways to make up ten?" and "which bear has 2 berries more than 5?"

I gush over Barron's illustrations all the time... and this one is no different. Like a lot of Canadians, I really don't care for Canada geese (cobra chicken anyone?), but even geese are a work of art in this book.

I reviewed a copy borrowed from the public library. Recommended ages 3-8, published by Owl Kids Publishing.
