It was a picture of pure love. The general sat at my feet, and carefully and lovingly undid the Velcro straps of my orthopedic boot. I watched as she carefully removed the boot. The boot had to come off for me to shower. Post shower, the General was once again at my feet capably getting me back into the boot.
For two and a half weeks following surgery, taking a shower wasn't an option. Consequently, I was elated when the cast and bandaging was removed, and I was back to wearing the orthopedic boot. Prior to the surgery, I negotiated putting the boot on without difficulty. However, now that I'm unable to tolerate putting any weight on my right foot, I cannot manage the boot on my own. Truth be told, I can't manage much on my own.
I would be totally at a loss were it not for the General. I could not do this alone. My needs have become a full-time job for her. Her world has changed dramatically. Yet, she doesn't complain and willfully defers to my needs over her own.
Valentine's Day had almost come and gone before I even thought of what day it was. Perhaps that was true for both of us. It is humbling to realize that I am the recipient of love in action. When I get back on my feet, I have a lot of catching up to do.
All My Best!
Don
