#NewComicsday and it's a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! Smurfs High Five sponsored by the All C's Spring Fan Expo who has a limited amount of vendor tables left. Get em while you can so you don't miss out on a great free to attend event. This week Image brings us one of the best Walking Dead issues in its deluxe edition, Marvel expands on a classic Wolverine story with the help of Chris Claremont, and we get a new Ultimate Black Panther. DC has a new Suicide Squad as we all Kneel Before Zod, but we've got more with five stacked high ready to fly:
Mace Windu #1> ONE OF THE GREATEST JEDI MUST STOP AN INCENDIARY SECRET FROM FALLING INTO THE WRONG HANDS! Even in the years before THE CLONE WARS, MACE WINDU was known for his discipline, determination and combat skills. When a scientist's discovery threatens the balance of the galaxy, Mace is led down a treacherous path of mystery and action. Introducing AZITA CRUUZ, a pirate with a deadly secret, who the HUTTS and the REPUBLIC will stop at nothing to control! (S) Marc Bernadin (A) Georges Jeanty
Smurfs Take> One of my favorite characters out of this era of Star Wars and wish there were more stories involving him. The few we've seen have been fantastic as they give us a little bit more of the character and just how impressive he was as a Jedi.
Batman #142> THE JOKER YEAR ONE – Part One/strong: The tragic death of the leader of the Red Hood Gang in a vat of chemicals has become the subject of myth…but what is the heartbreaking and gruesome tale of the monster who walked away from that violent birth? And how does it affect Batman's distant future? (S) Chip Zdarsky (A) Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Andrea Sorrentino
Smurs Take> The day we all knew would come is finally here. The day when the joke was over, and DC gives us the back story to who the Joker is and where he came from. Sure, over the years there's been many different stories and takes on the character, but it was never official…till now. I think in knowing takes away from the character a bit, undermines his power and hold as a terror. Doesn't mean I'm not going to read it and see what Chip delivers as a story.
Alien #4> THE PERFECT ORGANISM MEETS ITS MATCH?! When Xenomorphs crash-landed on moon LV-695, they did what they do best: SLAUGHTER. And…transformed. The native kaiju of this icy rock thought themselves apex predators, but they were no match for Xenomorph fury. Now a hybrid creature has emerged…is this the evolutionary twist that ends Xenomorphs? And will any humans live to tell the tale? Jun Yutani springs his final trap! (S) Declan Shalvey (A) Andrea Broccardo, Declan Shalvey
Smurfs Take> Well this is just terrifying! As if the Xenomorphs weren't a handful already. Love love love this series.
The One Hand #1> MINISERIES PREMIERE
Neo Novena detective ARI NASSER is about to retire with an enviable record, until a brutal murder occurs, bearing all the hallmarks of the "One Hand Killer"…which should be impossible, since Ari already put him away not once, but twice in the years before.
What follows is a deadly cat-and-mouse game as Ari pursues his quarry down the rain-soaked streets of Neo Novena. Ari will stop at nothing to unravel the secrets and ciphers of this case, but each revelation only leads further into the dark heart of his future-metropolis and Ari's own beleaguered soul.
Grippingly written by award-winning writer RAM V (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, Swamp Thing) with hauntingly atmospheric art and covers by LAURENCE CAMPBELL (Old Haunts, BPRD: Hell on Earth) and LEE LOUGHRIDGE (DEADLY CLASS), THE ONE HAND is a miniseries that will keep you guessing until the very end.
For fans of Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, and Black Mirror. (S) Ram V (A) Laurence Campbell, Lee Loughridge
Smurfs Take> A noir looking murder mystery…. Yes please. Image continues to give us some great non cape stories and I love them for it. If this live up to the billing it should be an amazing read.
Thundercats #1> Fleeing through space to escape their dying home world, the ThunderCats were attacked en route by their mortal enemies, the Mutants of Plun-Darr. After diverting their damaged flagship to a planet called Third Earth, the surviving ThunderCats now strive to rebuild their society in harmony with the new world's natives. But the Mutants, determined to possess the ThunderCats' mystical gem, the Eye of Thundera, have tracked them down - and they've also forged an alliance with Mumm-Ra, the devil-priest of Third Earth!
Now the ThunderCats, led by an inexperienced Lion-O, must band together as never before to protect their legacy from this combined enemy. But will they be able to withstand the onslaught of Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living, once he sets his eyes upon them?
The triple-threat talents (writers, artists, and ThunderCats superfans) of DECLAN SHALVEY and DREW MOSS join forces to bring this exciting new entry in the ThunderCats canon to life! This premier issue features 24 story pages as well as a host of the finest cover artists the galaxy has ever seen, including SHALVEY, DAVID NAKAYAMA, LUCIO PARRILLO, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, and IVAN TAO! (S) Declan Shalvey (A) Drew Moss (CA) David Nakayama
Smurfs Take> Trying to ride in on the recent nostalgia wave comes the latest attempt at Thundercats. The last few have been alright; I still think the last animated show was the best to date. And while the other 80's inspired titles have seen enormous success I have my doubts about this one. The other titles have given us something new and exciting with enough comforts of the past to keep the reader comfortable not a complete rehash of what's come before. I would love to see this title take off like the others, can't think of any other characters more deserving.
