Hi read, How are you today? Did you know that April is Stress Awareness Month? As if working mamas need to be more aware of their stress! But let's talk about stress, baby! (Does that make you think of the Salt-N-Pepa song?) For starters, let me say this. I am on the side of some stress is good. Things like deadlines, learning new skills, etc. can be stressful. Those stressful moments can help you build your abilities, gain confidence (especially as you build skills), and even positively impact your memory. When small bursts of stress become chronic or overwhelming, that isn't helpful to anyone. That's when things like fight, flight, or freeze kick in. That's when you can start to feel burnout. So, what can you do to kick stress to the curb? I'm sharing a few different ways that might help. Move your body. Movement varies, based on your needs, preferences, and the moment you're in. Create a workout routine at a gym or using the many online options, some of which are free on YouTube. Take a walk, solo or with a friend or colleague (walking meetings rock!). Do a dance party in the kitchen, solo or with your kids, as you prep dinner. Don't forget about yoga or stretching as a low impact option for moving your body. Practice stillness. Start your day with a self-care check-in to see how you're feeling and make adjustments as necessary. Meditate (I love the Calm app for this). Practice mindfulness (I gave some examples on LinkedIn in my weekly video this week.) Breathe. Try energy tapping. Create an infrastructure to support your stress management. Say No to say Yes to time and space for what you need to better manage stress. Share the mental load with your significant other and village. Prioritize self-care, whatever that looks like for you. Create a tribe to support you. Be realistic about what you can accomplish. Work smarter. And through all of this, give yourself space & grace as you figure things out. Being stressed doesn't mean you've failed. It's a signal to make intentional changes. You've got this, mama! What changes will you make to better manage your stress? Already a pro at managing stress? I'd love to hear what tips you share with your friends who are struggling. Be well, Suzanne PS Don't let your kids become frequent donors to their school's Lost & Found!
