Daily writing prompt
What are you passionate about?
I didn't expect a second act with motherhood, I have been a mother for a very long time. In fact, my entire adult life. So many parents get wrapped up in what college, sports team, or career, the list goes on and on. My goal, our goal is to raise good, happy, and responsible human beings. This second time around, I have gotten a lot of flack for having our children do so many chores because grasp, I am a stay-at-home mother. Chores vary from day today, week to week. Chores are a way to teach self-esteem, responsibility, and independence. I always smile and say if you reflect on what I do all day, it is still more than my children and husband do because I am a doer. Children need to understand what it takes to live in a cooperative, clean space with others. They need to learn that before they leave home. When we overdo for our children we are creating learned helplessness. When you see your son cook Shrimp Scampi without any help or your daughter master the sewing machine after she went on a teenage tirade, you know they are on track.
Emotional intelligence, I strived to create with our children. They had a rough start before they were mine. Empathy, self-awareness, emotion regulation, effective communication, and understanding others' emotions, to name a few. We model this. As parents, we admit our shortcomings and mistakes.
Every day I ask our kids did you do something that gave you joy today? If they say no, I say get to it. My husband has seen our daughter get her art out at 10 o'clock at night or our son playing his keyboard. Those things bring them joy.
