I've been trying to start the Rowdy Flats Library Quilt for several years now. During Covid, I didn't think it was possible to get the pattern. Turned out, a friend had it and was willing to give it to me. I was delighted to get a pattern, until I started looking it over. I realized very quickly that the pattern is well above my skill level.
So, I slow rolled the whole construction of it. I washed my fabrics, all of them, and pressed them. I bought, then washed and pressed all my background fabrics. I cut out shapes for block one, and auditioned them on the background, and changed my background at least twice. At the time I thought I was just being thorough before starting the quilt, but I see now that I was procrastinating!
One day this summer, I realized I had put it off for a long time, and that I was waiting out of fear and trying something new. What better way to build skills than by doing? I got out all the carefully packaged up pieces and set to work.
I still don't fully know how to make layers on an applique piece. I just don't get it. Does the vine get stitched before the leaves? Do I just make a best guess as to where each item should go and then sew it down? By golly I'm going to try again. It will be a miracle if this quilt turns out like it's supposed to. Nevertheless, I will persist!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Stacy
