The Armour of God Part 6 Sword of the Spirit
(5) the helmet of salvation guards our head, the brain, the mind (6) the sword of the Spirit defends and attacks – both offensive and defensive.
The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, is used by our Lord and Friend when the enemy came to tempt Him. (Matthew chapter 4, Luke chapter 4). Hebrews 4:12 tells us "The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart". Wow!
The word "sword" that Paul uses in Ephesians 6:17 is machaira, which is a short sword or possibly even a dagger. The machaira was a straight double-edged blade that a Roman soldier would use in close combat. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5) tells us 'Our weapons are not worldly but have divine power to demolish strongholds'. Paul defines these strongholds as arguments and pretensions that set themselves up against the knowledge of God. He says that we must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Spiritual stronghold are patterns of thinking that oppose God's truth and will. Strongholds are rooted in lies that have been exalted above God's realities and purposes.
The sword of the Spirit can restore our spiritual vision and reveal truth about God, ourselves, and others. The sword of the Spirit can heal our spiritual blindness and enable us to see with clarity and accuracy.
So as we put on the whole armour of God, (1) the belt of truth anchors us (2) the breastplate of righteousness protects us (3) the shoes of peace give us stability (4) the shield of faith wards off blows (6) the helmet of salvation guards our head (7) the sword of the Spirit defends and attacks, praying at all times with perseverance, our Lord and Friend is with us to strengthen and protect, lead and guide us into victory.
Abundant blessings to you and yours.
