It's the time of year I tend to overindulge in all the cheese. My mom originally started making these cheese balls years and years ago. As I've started hosting and entertaining more, I've taken over the tradition. Our entire family loves them and the best part is they are so easy to whip up. My mom's homemade cheese ball recipe is much cheaper to make yourself than buying them pre-made in the store.
The Main Ingredients
These are the only cheeses you'll need for the cheese balls. You can either use sharp cheddar or mild cheddar. I've done both in the past.
Everything You'll Need for Homemade Cheese Balls
Begin by prepping all of your cheeses by chunking them up to go through the meat grinder along with the onion. We bought our meat grinder from Cabelas, but there are tons of options also on Amazon.
When it comes to putting everything through the meat grinder, I like to go in a certain order. Start with the onions, then bleu cheese, Velveeta and sharp cheddar. Doing the sharp cheddar will help clean out the meat grinder from the softer cheeses.
My niece was helping me make the cheese balls and found it funny how the cheese came out looking like cooked spaghetti noodles. After all the cheeses are put through, add the relish, Worcestershire, mustard and horseradish.
Use rubber gloves to mix everything thoroughly and form into balls. I'm usually able to get about 5 cheese balls from the mixture. I make some with a coating of crushed pecans and leave some plain.
After they are all done, wrap them in saran wrap and store in the refrigerator or freezer if you won't be eating them right away.
When it comes to enjoying the cheese balls, I prefer spreading them on Ritz crackers!
Doesn't that look good? Enjoy!
