In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. Psalm 5:3
The word translated "hear" means to listen attentively (1), listen carefully (3), listen closely. What an amazing thing! First thing when I wake up God is listening. Will I remember Him? What will I say?
This is such an intimate verse! God expectantly waiting to hear our prayers first thing as we wake up, and then we, as we pray, expectantly waiting to hear his answer! On both sides there is anticipation.
The word translated "wait in expectation" above is one Hebrew word, tsaphah (צָפָה). I love that it means to keep watch (like a watchman), "to lean forward, i.e., to peer into the distance." Yes! Have you ever felt that way when you are waiting for an answer to prayer and it seems so long? That you are leaning forward, peering into the distance? But isn't it awesome and wonderful to know that God is leaning forward too, hoping to catch even a sigh, even a silent cry? That the Father is peering into the distance too? Like waiting for the prodigal to come home.
So the LORD must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the LORD is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help. Isaiah 30:18 (NLT)
Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, "The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." Lamentations 3:22-24
I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Psalm 130:5-6
Oh Lord, may you hear my voice in the morning, and we will lean forward in expectation together.
