Today's communal recess snack was the large baked Vietnamese crackers generously covered in black sesame seeds. They can be as large as dinner plates, some even bigger and round-ish in size. Crunchy, light, delicately flavoured and delicious.
Yesterday, it was the little green apples... I say apples but they are so unique in size and flavour- perhaps the main commonality they share with apples, as I know them, is the crunch factor. Sweet, juicy, crunchy goodness. Be mindful of the large seed in the middle.
The day before that I walked into the staff lounge and every table was covered with bright red watermelon cut into the classic triangle shape. The day before that, was candied slices of coconut. (This is the voice of experience when I say you cannot nibble just one piece of candied coconut, they might be most moorish snack I have eaten.)
I know our local colleagues are in for their week long on site visit when, at every morning recess, the staff lounge is generously flowing with snacks. Almost like magic, the treats appear and are put out on each table for everyone to share. As 10.15 am comes round, the volume goes up a few decibels as teachers, teaching assistants and our trainee colleagues crowd into the lounge- talking non stop, laughing and giggling -the conversation and laughter flowing over and under each other. Hot tea, cold coffee and snacks are passed around and the sense of celebrating each other, teaching, students, life in general, with their trials and tribulations abound.
Community can take so many forms. Every 8 weeks or so, I am reminded that generosity for each other, delicious locally made snacks and happy conversation are a great way to celebrate community.
