#NewComicsday and it's a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! DC and Image have a little lighter week but hard to say no to Kneel Before Zod and what's up next for the Birds of Prey while Antarctica nears the end. Most of the weight this week is Marvel as we see something for everyone but don't miss the new Spider-Gwen and Ms. Marvel titles. Smurfs High Five is sponsored by the All C's Fan Expo that's less than a month away. The free to attend event has more announcements to come, but for now we've got five stacked high ready to fly:
Ultimate X-Men #1> Visionary creator PEACH MOMOKO (DEMON DAYS, STAR WARS) creates a new generation of X-Men for an all-new universe! Hisako Ichiki is a teenage girl who just wants to live a normal life - go to school, hang out with her friends, ignore the political strife broiling over after the events of ULTIMATE INVASION - but life has other plans for her. In Japan, urban legends have sprung to life and brought some unusual new powers with them…Meet Armor, Maystorm and a group of new Ultimate X-Men the likes of which you've never seen before! (S) Peach Momoko (A) Peach Momoko
Smurfs Take> Well this just has Hotness written all over it! The Ultimate line has definitely caught the eye of every comic enthusiast across the country. Now add one of the most impressive artists in Marvels bullpen to the mix and I'm willing to bet this doesn't make it to the shelves in most shops. Peach did an amazing job with Demon Days and her take on the X-Men, making this a perfect fit for the newly inspired universe.
Void Rivals #7> Darak and Solila traverse the northern wasteland. Danger lurks around every corner. The Void Rivals corner of the Energon Universe continues to grow as PROXIMUS is on the hunt! (S) Robert Kirkman (S) Lorenzo De Felici
Smurfs Take> Can Kirkman keep the momentum going? To be honest he absolutely crushed it with the first six issues. Not just because of the fun little surprises he had throughout the story but the development and dynamic of the two main characters was great. Not sure what to expect and that's part of the fun.
Aliens: What If #1> WHAT IF…CARTER BURKE HAD LIVED? For years, fans of James Cameron's legendary Aliens questioned whether Carter Burke, a company man more hateable than the Xenos themselves, had actually survived the traumatic events on the terraforming colony Hadley's Hope. Now the actor behind the beloved villain, Paul Reiser, joins his son Leon and the star-studded team of writers and producers Adam F. Goldberg, Brian Volk-Weiss and Hans Rodionoff for a journey back to Hadley's Hope and the twisted escape of a man who should have died. (S) Hans Rodionoff (A) Guiu Vilanova
Smurfs Take> I have been looking so forward to this story ever since I saw the solicitation as we see one of Marvels best ideas influence this already great title. I guess the thought had never crossed my mind and now seeing this I wonder why. The Alien series for me has been a big hit and major success, exceeding all expectations and expanding a world I never thought would happen. So, when we get to play in that world a little bit, I'm all in.
Spectacular Spider-Men #1> The stars of two of Marvel's biggest series come together in their first ongoing series ever! That's right, Peter Parker and Miles Morales are going to team up on the regular, comparing notes and using said notes to take on some of their most dangerous bad guys. This duo is better than dynamic, amazing, sensational, superior…they're SPECTACULAR! And with GREG WEISMAN, writer of the fan-favorite animated Spectacular Spider-Man series, returning to Spidey along with Spider-Legend HUMBERTO RAMOS, you know it's going to be epic. (S) Greg Weisman (A) Humberto Ramos
Smurfs Take> Starting to feel like the early 90's again with all of the different Spider-Titles going on. Can there be too many? I like Miles, but his last few runs have not been the best and starting to worry he might not be strong enough to carry a title on his own. I don't know if adding him with Peter is the best answer as I start to get the Batman and Robin feels the more I think about it. Miles deserves his own title, no doubt about it, and hopefully Peter is more of a background character for this title but excited to see Marvel at least trying some new things.
Batman #145> DARK PRISONS – Part One/strong>
Following The Joker: Year One's stunning reveals, Batman must engineer an escape from Zur's prison…but what dark secret does Zur now hold that's a game changer for the Dark Knight and the entire DC Universe?! (S) Chip Zdarsky (A) Jorge Jimenez
Smurfs Take> Joker Year One was rather middle of the road for me. Didn't hate it but wasn't in love with it either and there's a few reasons why. The big one I believe is Joker fatigue and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight. I do want to see where the story goes, and the potential is huge, but I think one of the big misses has been ignoring a long history of other villains in Batman's rogue's gallery. Hell at this point I'd take a cosmic powered Calendar Man just to have something different.
