Dear Students,
It's undeniable that AI has transformed many aspects of our lives, including academic writing 💻. As AI increasingly influence the way we compose essays, reports, and theses, it's crucial to approach these tools with both enthusiasm and caution.
As a PhD student 👩🎓 RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau myself, I advocate for the thoughtful integration of AI in academic endeavors. However, it is imperative that you use these resources responsibly. When employing AI tools such as ChatGPT, I urge you to adhere to the following principles:
👉 Idea Generation and Expansion:
GPT can serve as a brainstorming partner, offering a variety of perspectives and ideas on a given topic. I encourage you to input preliminary ideas and see how GPT expands them, which can help in exploring different angles and hypotheses. This enhances the creative process by providing insights that you might not have considered, leading to a more nuanced thesis. Once this is done, ensure you have the literature your supervisor provided for you to cross-check by conducting a thorough literature review. See what the state of the art is for your topic and whether the new ideas can be implemented and researched in your work.
👉 Structural Planning:
Planning the structure is complex. GPT can assist in outlining the chapters or sections based on key themes and arguments you wish to pursue. By inputting the main topics and desired outcomes, it can suggest an effective structure that logically flows from introduction to conclusion. I strongly recommend having different structures generated & cross check with your supervisor which one would be okay to go ahead. This will aid you in organizing your thoughts coherently and ensuring comprehensive coverage of the subject.
👉 Source and Citation Suggestions:
While GPT (not all versions) does not access the internet or specific databases, it can surely suggest types of sources and potential authors or studies that are relevant to the topic based on its training data. This can serve as a preliminary step in the research process. You should, however, verify and critically evaluate these suggestions with your supervisor by accessing the actual sources, ensuring they are credible and relevant.
👉 Drafting and Language Enhancement:
GPT can help in drafting sections where you may struggle with articulation or where technical language is required. What you can do is that you can input sentences as they come to your mind, & GPT can transform these into well-formed, grammatically correct text. It's crucial, however, that you rewrite this output in their own words and integrates it into their personal narrative style, maintaining originality and authenticity in your writing.
👉 Revision and Feedback:
Use GPT as a tool to provide initial feedback on drafts. It can suggest improvements in grammar, coherence, and style. This will help you refine your work iteratively. I always encourage all students to critically assess any changes recommended by GPT to ensure they align with the thesis's objectives and academic standards. Ask your supervisor and certainly your colleagues (your friends studying the same topic or subject) to review your work and give you feedback.
🍀 All the best writing!
