Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber holds comfy funding lead over challengers ahead of Tuesday election by Jesse Scheckner Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber will enter Election Day Tuesday with a commanding fundraising lead over his four opponents, having raked in nearly $325,000 this cycle. Not counting two political committees he registered as contributors to his campaign this month, the incumbent Democrat now holds nearly $113,000. Of that, he raised more than $45,000 over the last month and a half, a stretch over which he spent nearly three times that amount. Gelber, who is seeking a third term as Mayor, received 198 contributions between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15. The donors were mostly individuals and came from a variety of professions — lawyers, bankers, real estate professionals and producers — as well as a plethora of retirees. The size of the checks he received were equally as varied, ranging from a $15 contribution from Deerfield Beach Commissioner Bernie Parness, to $1,000 from Eugene Rodriguez, owner of Miami-based fashion photography studio Big Time Productions. On Oct. 1, Gelber filed paperwork with the city showing his campaign would accept contributions from two political committees: New Leadership for Florida, run by Democratic political consultant Christian Ulvert, and YES for a Safer Miami Beach, a group run by Miami attorney Sam Rabin that is backing a Nov. 2 ballot referendum asking voters whether they want to move the last call for alcohol sales in the South Beach Entertainment District from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. Gelber's expenses largely comported with the general campaign activities of an experienced politician. He served for a decade as a state lawmaker and made a failed bid for Florida Attorney General before running for the Miami Beach Mayor position in 2017. He paid two South Florida political consulting and marketing firms — Ulvert's Miami-based Edge Communications and Fort Lauderdale-based MDW Communications — more than $60,000 apiece. Another local firm, BYG Strategies, got about $3,500. Gelber also paid Miami company Good Catch nearly $5,000 for shirts and signage. His closest fundraising competitor is Jean Marie Echemendia, a luxury realtor who has marketed herself as a non-special-interest alternative to Gelber. Her campaign platform focuses on crime prevention, overdevelopment prevention, flood mitigation and sea level rise prevention. Like all of Gelber's opponents, she opposes the 2 a.m. booze cut-off. Echemendia raised more than $85,000 this cycle, including a $50,000 self-loan at the onset of her campaign in August. She has about $14,000 of that remaining. Between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15, Echemendia raised and spent about $12,000. She received 25 contributions ranging from a $150 check from singer-songwriter Mashonda Tifrere to $1,000 donations from Keith Rabois, a partner at investment firm Founders Fund, and Accelerator Venture Capital Managing Director Alexander Lloyd. Like Gelber, her spending was in line with usual campaign practices. She paid nearly $6,000 to Miami company Victory Campaign Strategies for postcards and spent $172 on a campaign lunch at Miami Beach restaurant The Setali. Banking executive-turned-TV entrepreneur Ronnie Eith entered the race in May, but he only began to raise funds — about $7,500 altogether — in August. Of that, he has roughly $4,500 remaining. Between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15, Eith received 19 contributions from mortgage and investment bankers, doctors, insurance agents, a lawyer, real estate manager and motivational speaker, among others. His only spending came last month, when he paid the city a $1,360 qualifying fee for the election, $800 to a marketing company, $500 for research data and $125 to advertise on Facebook. Eith's main goal, his campaign website says, is "to re-establish Law & Order and make the streets not only of the Entertainment District safe but make all of Miami Beach safer for all." His other priority is responsible, environmentally conscious and sustainable development on the beach so it can "evolve and sustain itself for the next 100 years." Gus Manessis, the vice president of operations for Fort Lauderdale-based condo management company Cooper Properties Group, raised $3,250 over the course of his campaign. Since Sept. 1, he added and spent about $2,600 to his war chest through nine donations ranging from $150 to $500. He held just over $500 as of Oct. 15. His expenditures since September went mostly to two things: paying for his campaign website and the city qualifying fee. His ledger also includes a $534 charge for campaign flyers and a $25 membership fee to nonprofit advocacy group Miami Beach United. Rental property manager and activist Carlos "SP4" Enrique Gutierrez's campaign has been fully funded by $1,610 in self-loans since Sept. 1. Other than paying for the city qualifying fee, his spending doesn't appear to be in line with traditional campaign spending, going mostly to office supplies and a $26 purchase of bird seeds from Petco. As the Miami Herald reported, Gutierrez was arrested last May on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly chasing a man with a knife down a South Beach street. He claimed to have been acting in self defense, and his case was closed in June with no action. Refresher: 1) gather hair at the base of the neck as if you're going to do a low ponytail 2) twist the "tail" of that ponytail 3) bring the twist up the back of your head and lay it flat 4) use a claw clip to grab the twist along with some of the hair underneath 5) carry on with your day! This is the first recipe I've made from Carolyn Ketchum and I'm already in love with her. Baking is hard for me because you have to be so precise and anything can affect your outcome even humidity in the air. However, with the holidays coming up I told you guys that I wanted to be able to have some delicious deserts to serve at our dinners. Which was why I picked this book as our November book. There are so many delicious looking recipes in this book that aren't just desserts but dinner rolls, pizzas, etc. So far I'm really impressed with this book. I've told you guys in the past that I get everything ready for the next day after I put Kricket down for bed and get the kitchen cleaned up. I've found that this works well for us in case I'm out of something and we need to go to the grocery store in the morning. I've also been spending more time at our lake house because I have everything setup for my blog here and the layout of this house is so much more spacious that I don't feel like we're on top of one another but I'm also able to get what I need to get done, done. Unfortunately our grocery store doesn't carry too many gluten free items so bread, snacks that kind of stuff is up to me to bake! I finished cleaning the kitchen on Friday night around 8:30 PM / 9:00 PM when I started making these crackers. These are a little time intensive so FYI! It's the cooking, cooling and cooking again that takes some time. The prep was so fast! These graham crackers were delicious but also had the perfect texture. Which you know that's a deal breaker for my family. This recipe would also be great it you needed a graham cracker crust for a pie or for gluten free s'mores. The publisher, who has released a number of series written by Gogol including Dead End Kids and, most recently, Unborn, says they will be "placing all future projects with Frank on hiatus," as well as cancelling his sponsored convention appearances for the foreseeable future. However, the statement comes just as social media is calling Source Point's relationship with controversial creators into questions, including their use of a series written by Gogol as the art for NYCC's Pro badges, and an appearance by Dirk Manning at the Source Point Press booth just last weekend at the Baltimore Comic Con. Source Point released the full statement in a Twitter thread, in response to Gogol's announcement of a lawsuit filed against Malissa White over allegations she made against him earlier this year: In regards to the allegations made earlier this summer against one of the writers we publish, we apologize for our limited commentary and leaving any room for doubt as to where Source Point Press stands against harassment in our industry. Things moved swiftly into legal proceedings, and at no point has it been our place to air the legal circumstances of others. While transparency is important to us as a company, it was also important to us to respect the privacy of every party involved. For now, we're placing all future projects from Frank on hiatus, and Frank will not be attending any conventions as part of Source Point Press's booths while legal proceedings are ongoing. Source Point Press believes deeply in making both our company and our industry a safe, celebratory, and diverse space, and we know action is the key to change. Going forward, we're setting up a quarterly budget devoted entirely to supporting projects by marginalized creators outside of Source Point Press, and we're in the process of forming a paid committee of marginalized industry members to help us react appropriately and take proactive efforts to move the industry in a direction we believe in. Back in August, Malissa White alleged that Gogol had used a racial slur toward her at NYCC in 2018. White posted about her experience with Gogol on social media, saying that she had been introduced to Gogol that year at BarCon by a mutual friend. White described Gogol talking over her and giving her "disgusted looks" even before he allegedly got drunk and his behavior worsened to include making a racist remark about how Black people look. Gogol has vehemently denied the allegations, or even having met White beyond one encounter in 2017, and last week week announced his intention to file a defamation suit against White. Source Point's statement doesn't indicate that they are cutting ties with Gogol completely; merely that they're placing his future projects on hiatus until his lawsuit against White is done. What that means for his current projects with the publisher - Unborn has two issues still to be released - is unclear. The statement is already under fire on Twitter because as recently as Friday Source POint 'liked' Gogol's initial tweet announcing the suit against White. The 'like' has since been removed, and Source Point has said the tweet reaction was "unintentional." Rumblings around Source Point's relationship with Gogol in light of the allegations against him picked up steam a few weeks ago at New York Comic Con, a show with badge designs promoting different projects both current and upcoming from the publisher. While this is usually a fairly innocuous thing, this year's 4-Day Pro badge design was in support of the Gogol-written Unborn, the first two issues of which the publisher has already released. Unborn was announced by Source Point Press back in July, but the badge designs for NYCC were unveiled on August 24th, nearly three weeks after White shared her experience with Gogol on social media. In addition to work for Source Point Press, Gogol has also worked on BOOM! Studios' line of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics. Following White coming forward with her story, BOOM! quietly removed Gogol from the December-debuting Power Rangers Universe limited series, replacing him with writer Nicole Andelfinger, though his name still appeared listed for the first issue of the series in Previews. Gogol isn't the only creator accused of inappropriate behavior who Source Point Press has continued to work with and promote. The publisher currently has multiple books written by Dirk Manning due out later this year. Manning was the subject of allegations made last year by multiple women, who accused Manning of a pattern of harassment and sexual misconduct. The Premium Exhibitor and Thursday badges for this year's NYCC both promoted Source Point Press projects written by Manning and he was a guest of their Baltimore Comic Con booth over the weekend.
