A book that includes ordinary apartment life, fantastic inventions, a focus on community, a working mom and an elderly neighbour nanny... there's a lot to appreciate about the relatable world that 48 Grasshopper Estates depicts.
Sicily is a creator, and today she is on a mission to create the perfect friend. Her exciting adventures would be SO much better with a companion. But, none of her creations seem to hit the spot. We go along with Sicily on her journey spreading cheer throughout the apartment community, and eventually find her perfect adventure buddy.
I've said it before... I LOVE picture books that reflect apartment living in a positive light. (I think I mention the book Going Up! every time I bring this topic up, but as an apartment-dweller myself who is trying to navigate how we will hopefully live in Vancouver with a family one day... It's on my mind!) I think they are important in building empathy and communities of understanding and safety.
The cute illustrations have a lot to look at (the most adorable aquarium of snails?!) and as the text describes Sicily's creations, your eyes want to find each little friend. There is a "split-screen" thing happening in the page layout between Sicily and the eventual friend that she makes, which got a bit confusing a couple of times. But it could also be fun for some "who do you think that is? What do you think will happen?" guided inference questions. The brick building is homey and inviting.
Disclosure: I purchased this book myself. Recommended ages 4-7
