It's always been a golden rule to never get romantically involved with a coworker. But sometimes you just can't help it.

Dating a coworker is the ultimate blend of business and pleasure. On rare occasions, the recipe produces a toxic mess and even results in termination. Other times, however, if you're lucky, everything falls into place, and your coworker could end up being your soul mate.

And let's not pretend like we don't know that office romances happen, people are just very good at hiding it. Office romance is unavoidable when you spend 40 hours a week in the same space.

We recently asked people to share their office romance stories and they responded with everything from disastrous affairs to heartwarming love stories.

N.B. names have been changed to hide the identities of respondents.

1. Darlington

Cheated on one girl with another we both worked with, got caught, and we all worked together the next day. My manager saw me first thing when I came in and said "I hear you've been dipping your pen in the company ink on more than one occasion." That was a fun day.

2. Odera

I once fell head-over-heels with my coworker. He was much older than me and wanted a 'friends with benefits' kind of relationship. I was the naive one who thought he would change his mind and actually take me out on dates. We had our share of fights and disagreements, both at work and in private. The general manager knew about our relationship.

There was also some gossip at work about the kind of relationship we had with each other, even though we tried to keep it professional. All the gossip got to me emotionally. I decided to leave the company without saying goodbye to anyone at work.

On my last day, I wrote a letter of resignation without a two-week notice (which I now regret). I let the boss know that I was tired of working in a toxic environment, but I thanked him for the opportunity and experience I gained while working there. I never went back to get my last paycheck, even though I needed the funds to keep me going.

3. Rene

I started messaging the weird intern in my office out of sheer boredom while I was waiting to hand in my notice at a shitty job. We ended up going for drinks under the guise of a "mentoring session" and had sex. This continued for about a month, with meticulous planning involved to avoid arriving at work at the same time.

Then he started asking me to borrow money, inviting himself to dinner, and asking for me to sub him lunch money. When I realized he was just using me for money due to my employed status, I stopped sleeping with him, which was a shame, because the sex was actually pretty decent. Last I heard of him was when he sent me a LinkedIn request for more "mentoring advice."

4. Bisola

I resumed at my new office in May and the HR manager took me around to introduce me to the rest of the team. One of the few people that caught my attention was this young, hot and fine ass director. He was the youngest director in the firm. I thought it was just going to be a normal office crush that was going to fade away, but soon enough I found myself hanging in his office a lot. He was a lot older so I just assumed he was taking me in as a mentee.

We were going out for lunch together, even on days when I brought lunch from home, I'd eat in his office. Of course, there were gossips flying around the office that I was sleeping with him, especially when we started going home together. I'm sure he must have heard the gossips, but he just chose to ignore them because we weren't doing anything. But you really can't be spending so much time with someone without feelings popping up. I had started catching feelings for him, but I was prepared to keep that to myself because I hate embarrassment.

On one of our rides after work, I just blurted it out there and then that I liked him, I don't know what got into me. Luckily, he felt the same way about me. We started seeing each other and decided it was best we spend less time together at the office. We've been together ever since then and it's been amazing and of course, the sex is amazing too. I'm working on resigning, so it doesn't feel too weird but I know I'd miss our secret office makeout sessions.

5. Godson

Have you ever found yourself crushing on a co-worker? What will you do if it's your boss? So the thing is, I have been sleeping with my boss for over a year.

I wouldn't lie it has been thrilling and fun. From the stealing kisses and caresses here and there to the heart jarring sex after work. Our relationship was mutually beneficial and cool.

However, things became kind of weird during valentine. A lady that liked me got me a cake and some other valentine gifts and she saw them. Of course, I got her something for valentine too but she didn't believe I had anything to do with the other lady.

The wahala was that the gifts (couple spa ticket, arousing oils and a love shaped bed wedge) I got should only be given to a lover, so I don't blame her. After valentine, things just became too awkward, she almost stopped talking to me. I was lucky I wasn't sacked.

6. Raman

Let me start by saying I fucked up. Seriously it was just a slip-up but she couldn't forgive.

So my female coworker and I really hit it off, and eventually secretly made it official. She was scared of the gossip it would cause if our colleagues found out, so I often kept my distance at work.

On the night of Valentine, some guys from work went out for a few drinks, and after a few, we were all sharing love stories and I mistaking dropped it that I was in love with her. Things went south from there, when everyone turned to her she was embarrassed. She stood up without a word and left. I ran after her but the damage was done. She called it off the next morning.
