Our Costco tarp carport frame snapped at the base of the poles in the windstorms we had last winter. It was anchored to railroad ties, but the legs snapped in the supports.
This fall, we are re-engineering without actually creating a "real" building. Four 10-foot fence posts later, we have a sturdy set of supports that really shouldn't go anywhere (they're buried 3 feet deep), and we've bolted the footings to the top of those supports. We're only creating a hay storage half the size of the original carport, but hopefully a much more stable one. The "floor" is made of pallets, to keep the hay off the ground.
The next step will be to place the original railroad ties around the outside, with eyebolts to tie the tarps to. There may also be some addition cross bracing added for stability.
The wind might be able to rip the tarps, but I'm hoping the frame will stay put this time! I hope to find bungee rope instead of regular nylon rope, to run zigzag across the tarp to keep it from flapping.
