Next week AfterShock Comics will release Chicken Devil #1. The new dark crime comedy comes from writer Brian Buccellato, artist Hayden Sherman, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Today The Beat can reveal an exclusive four-page preview of the debut issue of the series.
Here's how AfterShock describes Chicken Devil #1:
Mitchell Moss is about as regular as it gets. He's married with two children, and co-owns a successful chain of Memphis Hot Chicken restaurants. It's not the life that screams hero/vigilante...until he discovers that his business partner is in bed with the mob and owes them $2 million. Unfortunately, Mitch is ill-equipped to be a badass—he's just a guy who makes really good chicken. Can he protect his family from cold-blooded gangsters? Absolutely not.
But maybe the CHICKEN DEVIL can…
Back when the series was initially announced, Buccellato described what drew him to want to work on the story of Chicken Devil:
What excites me most about this book is that it's an opportunity to showcase a different creative side (that people will hopefully like). Even though there are literal life-or-death situations, it's done in a light, more irreverent way. Don't get me wrong, there are serious relationships and consequences at play… but the experience is intended to be breezy and fun as it plays off well-known crime and revenge genre tropes.
I'm of the belief that everything is better with at least one character wearing a chicken costume. The movie U.S. Marshalls may not be as good as its predecessor, The Fugitive, but it does scores major points for putting Tommy Lee Jones in a chicken suit at one point. I was also a big fan of Chicken Boo from Animaniacs, so maybe I'm just an easy mark for large poultry. Either way this series sounds and looks like a lot of fun.
Check out the exclusive five-page preview, as well as the variant cover by David Lopez, for Chicken Devil #1 below. The first issue of the series arrives in stores and digitally next Wednesday, October 6th.
