Halloween is our absolute FAVORITE holiday. We have been going FULL OUT since the first year we started dating. We spend months brainstorming our costumes, after 10 years we are really starting to push the limits and get creative.

When it was just the two of us, we would go every other year on who got to pick the costumes. Once we had kids, we have started playing off the "vibes" for the year. Last year we decided to play off of our eldest son's obsession - SPACE. We went back and forth on how to do this. Do we do four planets? Rocket ship and the boys astronauts? All astronauts? Pick one planet and all link together? The options were endless...

It took us some time but we eventually landed on The Sun (Dad), Earth (Mom), Moon (our toddler) & then an Astronaut (our infant). I am a big fan of creating costumes, instead of purchasing them. Granted, there have been years where I have not been able to take on that challenge...but this year, I WENT FOR IT...3 months postpartum (the new baby adrenaline was clearly still in action). Read below our step-by-step instructions on how we whipped this costume together in under 48 hours!!!

SUN, EARTH, MOON COSTUME STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Supplies Needed:

  • FOR ALL THREE:
    • Stencils/Round objects for circle cuts
    • Tape Measure
    • Scissors (fabric & regular)
    • Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
    • Duct Tape
    • Cardboard
    • Black Clothing (long sleeves & pants)
  • SUN
    • Yellow Felt (2 yards made (2) 30in circles *had leftover)
    • Red & Orange Fabric Spray Paint (Tulip brand is AWESOME)
  • EARTH
    • Blue Felt (2 yards made (2) 25in circles *had leftover)
    • Green Felt (0.5 yard made all continents *had leftover)
    • White Felt (0.5 yard made all continents *had leftover)
    • Cotton Balls
  • MOON
    • Grey Felt (0.75 yards made (2) 13in circles *had leftover)
    • White, Black & Silver Fabric Spray Paint (Tulip brand is AWESOME)

Step One: Cut Out Circles For Base. Be sure to base this off your body height. You need two circles per costume. Our play table actually ended up being the perfect size, so we had a solid stencil to trace! 🙂

  • SUN - 30 inch circles covered my husband (5'11)
  • EARTH - 25 inch circles covered me (5'5)
  • MOON - 13 inch circles covered our toddler (2T)

Step Two: Decorate Circles *to save time, we only decorated one side of the felt circles.

  • SUN: For the Sun we sprayed the yellow felt with red & orange fabric spray. My husband got really into it. Even added some flares 😉
  • EARTH: I hand drew & cut out some green & white felt continents and hot glued them to the blue felt. Then I stretched out cotton balls to create the look of clouds/storms from space.
  • MOON: My husband cut out small grey shapes to make craters. He hot-glued the centers down and then bunched up the edges and hot-glued those down.
  • MOON CONTINUED: Once that was done he fabric sprayed the edges of the "craters" with black and white fabric spray paint to give it shadows and texture (use parchment paper to cover other felt sections). We then sprayed over the entire moon with the silver glitter to make it glisten!

Step Three: Add Cardboard Center (Sun & Earth): For my husband & I, we decided to have the costume just on the front end of our bodies, to make it easiest to get off and on while handling the boys. Since the felt circles were so large, they were floppy, so we used some old amazon boxed to create a center base. We did a rectangle to match our torsos and then add a few smaller strips going out to make the circle more stable. We then hot glued the second felt circle (not decorated) that we had cut over it.

*I should have added more of a cardboard structure to the Sun costume, my husband's wasn't as sturdy as the Earth.

Step Four: Add Straps

SUN & EARTH - we cut 4 inch x 20 inch straps to loop over our necks and attached with hot glue to the other side (halter). Measure for comfortability.

MOON - we cut (2) 1.25 inch x 12 inch for the shoulders, (2) 2.5 inch x 12 inch for the side straps. We then attached the straps on one end and then tried it on our toddler to size.

*My husband even fabric spray painted one side strap darker to be the "dark side of the moon". #fulloutdad

& YOU ARE DONE!!! WAY TO GO!!! Now you just need to make your little astronaut!

INFANT ASTRONAUT COSTUME STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Supplies Needed:

  • White Infant Body Suit (Rabbit Skins has EVERYTHING! They can be found on Amazon)
  • Black Stretch-Cotton (I used left over from a recent tshirt I had cut up!)
  • Avery Iron-On Transfer Paper (I used the one for "Dark Fabrics" because I had it on hand. Since the suit was white, the standard iron-on paper would work too!)
  • Black Fabric Paint & Sponge Brush
  • Black Thread & Needle
  • Scissors (Fabric & Paper)

Step One: Paint Cuffs (I painted right up to the hem line, but did not cross over it keep the lines clean.

I do not have a photo of just the cuffs painted, but here was how it turned out! 🙂

Step Two: Make Patches for Iron On Transfer Paper

  • I found images online of the patches I liked. I wanted actual patch look so I found images of patches for sale so it should embroidery stitching.
  • I made the patches approximately 1.5-2 inches based on where I was placing the patch (my infant was in 6 month clothing at the time)

Step Three: Make Straps, Clip & Other Compartments as well.

  • I found images online of a clip and sized it according to my costume ratio.
  • I made the straps on Microsoft Word with the rectangle shape they have and sized it according to my costume ratio.

Step Four: Iron-On all Decals *Follow the instructions on transfer paper (be careful to not accidentally iron on the fabric paint, it will make the color change....WHOOPS)

Step Five: Add cotton collar to top of body suit.

  • I made his collar from an old black t-shirt, I cut a four inch wide piece and folded it in half and hand sewed it around the neckline, loosely. I cut it down to size once I got all the way around the neckline. This way it was comfortable for him and took me minimal time!
