In an announcement made on Thursday, November 11th, 2021, it was revealed that Zoya Akhtar (Gully Boy) will be directing The Archies, which is described as a "coming-of-age musical drama," which will be coming soon to Netflix.
According to the article on Variety, the movie will be set in 1960s India. The adaptation will be produced by Reema Kagti for Tiger Baby, with Sharad Devarajan producing for Graphic India.
Archie's Gonna Be There
Although not too much is known about the adaptation at this juncture, the news was announced in the most awesome way possible: with a comic! Archie Comics recruited some A-List talent to announce the streaming-screen adaptation, enlisting the assistance of writer and artist Dan Parent (Kevin Keller's creator) and letterer Jack Morelli (who I am willing to bet lettered every single Archie Comic you've laid your hands on lately) in order to herald the announcement about the upcoming movie.
In the short comic, the four core Riverdale teens are walking through a wooded area on their way to Pop's when they come upon an advertisement for a movie by Akhtar that is coming to Netflix. After Betty and Veronica both affirm how excited they are about a movie from the director, they wonder who will be starring in the upcoming feature… only to discover they are (thanks to a conveniently placed billboard)!
Perhaps best of all, Archie Comics included the credits for the advert-comic in their Tweet, so the creators who worked on the announcement can be dully recognized! If only the marketing for all comic book adaptations was so cognizant of the source material on which it was based…
