As teased through the official Spider-Man Twitter earlier today, Marvel announced that a brand-new villain, Queen Goblin, will debuting in the pages of the Amazing Spider-Man title this February.
A new era of Amazing Spider-Man began last month when a rotating team of writers consisting of Kelly Thompson, Saladin Ahmed, Cody Ziglar, Patrick Gleason, and Zeb Wells took over the title and Spidey clone Ben Reilly took over the webslinging duties after Peter Parker fell into a coma.
Designed by Marvel Stormbreaker Patrick Gleason, Queen Goblin will debut in Amazing Spider-Man #88. Much like Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, and pretty much most Spidey Goblins you can expect the identity of the character to be kept under wraps. I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume it's not Jean Grey clone Madelyne Pryor who took on the mantle of the Goblin Queen during her villainous turn. Though the irony of Ben Reilly facing off against another clone like himself is too delicious!
Executive Editor Nick Lowe described the genesis of the character:
"Queen Goblin was one of the coolest ideas from our BEYOND story summit. All of the writers were riffing on the concept and character and when Pat Gleason dug in on the design we all LOST it. You aren't going to believe this newest addition to Spidey's rogue's gallery!"
In addition, artist Patrick Gleason detailed the process of designing the newest Spidey villain:
"When Nick and Zeb asked me to help with character design for QUEEN GOBLIN in Beyond I was thrilled," says Gleason. "We went New-Medieval with some tweaks on the old Goblin toys. What's even more fun is letting her off the chain and watching the rest of the art team like Arthur Adams run with her. The writing team has been working like crazy to make her debut worthy of a Queen. I'm writing a scene now that will hopefully melt some brains too."
Marvel also announced that a special Amazing Spiderman #88.BEY one-shot written by Geoffrey Thorne with art by Jan Bazaldua and Jim Towe that will feature the return of the super hero team—THE SLINGERS! Moreover, it also see see Hobie Brown ditching the Prowler identity and take on the identity of The Hornet. ascends to new heights as The Hornet!
Meanwhile over in the pages of Miles Morales: Spider-Man #35, writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Michele Bandini continue their run as Miles and Shift f turn to the Beyond Corporation for help in their fight against Space Stone-host Quantum and the Assessor.
