5 Ways To Embarrass Your Teen By Simply Existing

It doesn't matter how objectively cool you are, whether you know the latest slang or part your hair in the middle. If you are a teenager's mother, then yawning, breathing, and walking in their general vicinity are all CRINGE to them. I laughed out loud reading Katie Bingham-Smith's latest, outlining all the ways you'll annoy your teens by daring to exist.

She writes about the time she took her kids back-to-school shopping. Forbidden to offer advice, stand nearby, or make eye contact, she attempted to entertain herself: "I tried on a hat and took a selfie in the mirror to kill some time. Big mistake. They all immediately sent me a text telling me to stop because I was embarrassing them, even though no one knew I was their mother. This moment ruined their reputation."

There's something comforting about knowing no matter what you do, it'll embarrass them. Might as well lean into the goofy jokes!

I Was A Red Panda, Too

When writer Vanessa Kroll Bennett turned on Pixar's latest, Turning Red, the main character's struggles immediately took her back to her own childhood: "Long before puberty, my big feelings — hurt, anger, frustration — resisted containment." It didn't make her easy to parent, she admits, but that doesn't mean those big feelings were something bad that ought to be shoved down, either. "We want our kids to be able to talk about how they feel, even if it's uncomfortable for the people who love them. We want our girls to trust us, their adults, to be able to handle the strength of their feelings," she writes, offering up advice for approaching the red panda in your house. For starters: Do not tell her to "calm down."
