"A life lived in ignorance of one's own ills is the least painful."
Aristotle, in the Legend of Silenus
YOONGI Date: April 02, 2020
His body fell onto the hot asphalt and he felt it scrape the skin off his hands even before the white light completely dissipated of his sight and allowed him to breathe properly again. Yoon, despite his already assumed difficulty in coordinating events, when he was able to see again, he immediately knew the reason for his curious lucidity: he was in front of the door of the bar where Namjoon's friend worked.
He was close to them, he knew that without having to see them. He smiled sarcastically with a feeling almost as sour as the bile on his tongue, as he sat up to get out of there as soon as possible. It wasn't even necessary to have them in his line of sight to be sure, his memory told him that there were undoubtedly more awakened ones nearby (or "timeless ones", as Jimin called them). He remembered that those two young people -who shared the misfortune of feeling what was happening with the world- were an anchor for his mind, although unfortunately momentary and unstable.
His steps picked up speed and firmness as he left the threshold of the family bar that Hoseok had kicked him out of. The information that Scientist Park had given him was still clear in his head, although he couldn't tell for how long it would happen, making him feel anxious. The memories of the encounter with Vante, the state in which that curly-haired boy was and the terrible knowledge of what would happen to him in a short time made him shudder.
He was screwed. More screwed up than he'd ever been. Understanding was worse, understanding what was happening was worse when his hands remained tied and he was unable to help himself or others, now was worse than when he stupidly and blissfully managed to ignore the terrible reality of the facts. His escape route, however, was cut short before he was even a block away. Once again, impulses that he couldn't understand made him turn around and see Namjoon rushing a few meters away from him the opposite direction. Of course, the young man had no way of knowing that he had just appeared on the same date that the three of them had met only hours before, nor that the attraction that made him join those boys was pure physical, as if they were magnets. —He's safe,—he murmured to himself, following him with cautious steps without even being aware of his actions until he saw him enter a building that he assumed was where the brunette lived.
With trembling hands, he wiped the sweat from his forehead, trying to clear his thoughts as he closed the distance to the threshold that Joon had just passed through without looking back.
He wanted to warn him that he was in danger. But he couldn't get closer than half a block from him without generating a break that carried him far away. His index finger slowly ran over the name "Kim Namjoon" placed next to the apartment number and the corresponding doorbell.
—I need you to be careful until I can explain everything to you…—he sighed thinking about what the hell he could do to get the message across.
HOSEOK Date: April 03, 2020
—Are you having another panic attack?
He waited a few more seconds, anxious and walking from side to side through his dining room without hearing any answer from the telephone speaker.
—Shit, Namjoon! —He yelled in exasperation throwing the device to the ground without even bothering to turn it off, in a fit of fury and impotence.
His attention returned to the television and the news channel that was airing, a frenetic news reporter was explain the rapidly expanding random riots along with the story about a pandemic that he could swear hadn't existed hours ago.
—This is wrong…Fucking wrong.
He pulled his hair hard, as if with that action he could finally wake himself up from this new nightmare in which he was plunged. Something had changed, and he had no idea why.
He had never experienced changes in the past, or at least not that he had noticed. He couldn't help but wonder: Did it mean they had done something wrong the day before? Or was it someone else's actions?
—My life gets worse every second, I can't believe it—he murmured shrinking in his place without knowing that, in the building opposite, a man from the government saw the call in progress from Namjoon's cell phone and asked for a tracking of the position.
JIMIN Date: ??????
—Min Yoongi... I wanted you to meet Vante—Park stopped for a moment to observe both young men look each other in the eyes and move like two cautious animals that were evaluating whether to flee or remain in their place.—Another timeless of your same class—he finally clarified.
He still wasn't sure that the meeting between the two was a good idea, and that fact made him have sweaty and shaky hands and have a compulsive tick to clean his glasses again and again. The chances of success were remote, especially if in the calculations he took into account the emotional instability of both timeless, then the success rate would decrease considerably .
Jimin was aware of the tiny chance that the meeting would be beneficial, but absolutely everything was ruined in the world so he had nothing to lose by trying, or at least that was what he had been repeating to himself with each step he took as he walked towards the boy when he found him in the middle of the ruined city.
—Vante—he called with a feigned calm, getting the curly-haired boy to focus his attention on him— I remind you that your periods of lucidity are very short, I recommend that you try to be concise.
A little twitch of disgust peeked out from the corner of the boy's thin lips, although he still nodded silently before returning his gaze to Yoongi who was looking at him as strange as he was distrustful. "It was to be expected" he thought, reviewing again the young man with whom he had shared his days for an incalculable time. In those moments, Vante looked healthy and fully functional. He really hoped that his companion's period of consciousness would be enough for the cherry-haired boy to trust them and understand the seriousness of the matter. On the other hand, he hoped that when said lucidity passed, his "episode" would not be too serious or too violent to scare the little teenager or put them both at risk.
—You don't even need to say it, Park—the young man with cinnamon-colored skin said in a dry and grave voice, addressing him but without stopping to inspect the new member—How bad is the boy?
Park noticed Min's brow furrow at the somewhat derogatory word "boy" and he tensed in place ready to interpose if necessary.
—The emotional control part shows that serotonin levels are not right. But luckily it doesn't seem to have episodes yet.
—That makes it trustworthy… right?
Park was going to speak but Yoongi's voice losing patience interrupted him before he could say a word.
—Is someone going to explain to me what is happening or are they going to continue talking about me as if I wasn't here?
The man's mouth remained open again without expressing himself, this time interrupted by the dark-haired man.
—Disrespectful child. You are damaged, like me.
The brunette wiped the sweat from his hands nervously, moving forward to stand between them.
—The word is not "damaged", ok?—His eyes sought to connect with those of the cherry-haired man.—Yoongi, do you remember what we were talking about radiation and black holes?
Min nodded slowly, annoyance still on his features.
—Good. Yoongi, I need you to understand that you are doing what I always wanted to achieve.
The boy blinked a few times, as if he processed his words as the anger evaporated from his face as a practiced mask of calm and seriousness took over his features.
—I don't understand…— he mumbled.
—We said that time folds like paper that can be crossed with a pencil, making shortcuts that jump from moment to moment without linear connection—he repeated calmly but without softening the hardness of his expressions.—You are taking shortcuts. Sadly you are not controlling the pencil, the shortcuts happen and you…fell through them.
The horror began to appear on the boy's face as he understood.
—You said that wormholes don't absorb people…!—He shouted hysterically with a trembling voice and pointing an accusing finger at him.— You said that they dissolved being small and that they only caused radiation!
—And that's what happened. They were negligible, people only suffered the consequences...
—But they are always exceptions to the rule kid — Interrupted Vante.—We are not like most people. We feel when we fall through to time but the more it happens...
—You two have different reactions than the others. More sensitive.
—Why? What is different about us from others?
—That, I'm afraid, is something I couldn't discover. Things got out of control before we could establish common ground between the others awakened. The chaos started and spread too quickly, and the deterioration you both have is very complex.
—Chaos? What do we-?—the teenager's complaint was suspended unfinished in the air, setting off the alarms in the scientist head as he turned around to look at them. The shock on Yoongi's face, who was no longer looking at him but at Vante, made him understand before he finished turning to see: the lucidity in his partner was leaving as quickly as it came. His companion had a dazed but maniac look, observing a fixed point as if someone or something was there, and he even began to insult in that direction, giving erratic movements with his body that made him look drunk.
—Let's go, you don't want to see this,—said Park, taking Min by the wrist and taking him to another office on the same floor, leaving behind the loud screams and incoherence from a young man who was seeing terrible things that weren't really there but haunting his mind.
