It was a new experience for us. We are in the early stages of building, and we have never been present when concrete trucks delivered cement for a foundation. I suspect the procedure we observed yesterday was out of the norm for the other five homes we've built previously.
We arrived at the job-site early afternoon to check on progress. It is less than a 30-minute drive from where we now live. Consequently, we can maintain our sense of connection with the people who have been an important part of our lives because we will still be in the area.
Truthfully, I'm not sure what I expected to find, but I didn't envision that along with cement trucks, there would also be a boom truck to deliver cement in the exact place and amount that was needed. Reportedly, the temperature of the fresh cement was 100 degrees.
While we were at the site of what will be our new home, we took the opportunity to walk through the house next door. The builder has finished framing the exterior and interior walls. The layout for the home is pretty impressive. The home will have lots of glass, and the view from the living area and primary bedroom leaves nothing to be desired.
We went back around 7:00 o'clock last night, and the crew that had worked a very long day were preparing to leave.
While we were there, we met neighbors who are also new to the neighborhood. The people directly across the street from us moved into their home on March 15th. I remember the date only because it coincides with my birthday. They are probably younger than we are, but they have children and grandchildren within 45-minutes of their new home. They wanted to get out of the concrete jungle and opted for this location.
We also met a young couple that moved in their home a month ago. They determined that life was too short to live in Dallas and moved to the hill country to be near where he grew up. The couple have a sixteen-month-old son.
Before we left, we met two ladies who were out walking - a mother and daughter. The daughter recently put her home on the market in Georgetown, and it sold in a day. She plans to build in the neighborhood, but has not yet selected a builder.
I was intrigued when she said she wanted to do some of the work herself. Apparently, she has a skillset for woodworking and wants to build all of the cabinets in her new home.
At any rate, the brief contact with folks who will soon be neighbors was a feel-good moment for us. I'm still hoping we will be in our new home before the end of the year. That is clearly magical thinking on my part.
The builder is saying during the first quarter of 2023. Of course, I'm telling myself he is being careful not to over-promise what he may not be able to deliver. Only time will tell, but they should start framing the house week after next.
