Backpacking is not about creature comforts. It's rough. We were headed up the mountain yesterday and reached the summit at 5 pm. I saw a bear. It is a good thing that I had the dog because she obeys me. The kids were fighting amongst each other. One of our children is a defeatist. He decided that he would hike with me because I do not give in. Our daughter struggled and was quite vocal about the family dynamics that have been going on. Nothing brings people together like nature. Our menfolk were waiting for the barbed words and crying women. I cut to the chase and said "There will not be any of that. I won't engage in toxicity." I am hiking my 10 miles and dropping in my sleeping bag."
You can tell a lot about a person by how they approach a mountain. There are those who complain, those who freeze at the thought, the one that takes it in chunks, and the one that simply takes it in stride. Our son starts as the freeze, my husband takes it in chunks, our daughter complains, and I am the let's get it done stride.
Dinner for me is liquid proteins. The Kids are having those fancy astronaut meals, and my husband, bless him is eating warm sandwiches. We will be down the mountain tomorrow.
