My Mom Is Toxic, And It's Shaped My Relationship With My Daughter

Today, we've got a raw and very honest piece from Diana Park about how her rocky relationship with her mother has shaped her relationship with her own daughter.

She writes: "When I was younger I stuttered and was too loud for my mother. She was always telling me to calm down. She would say, 'Can you go five minutes without moving or talking?' She had me sit at the kitchen table and turn on a timer and remind me that when I was around it 'felt like she had ten extra kids.' I grew up with two sisters who were very quiet. It was obvious my mother favored them over me. She didn't know what to do with me and I grew up feeling like I was too much to handle."

That kind of thing casts a long shadow – read to find out how it's influenced her parenting.

The Most Pure Mom Bliss Happens At The Community Pool

Today, Thao Thai has a lovely ode to one of my favorite places: the community pool. Part of the appeal, she explains, is that this is a place where moms actually can relax: "Mostly, the kids are left to the surveillance of the dozen lifeguards roaming the perimeter of the pool, friends, and dads," she writes. "For once, moms aren't called to be at-attention the way they are in so many other parts of their lives." Give it a read and see if you agree.
