So, we arrived at the vet. Our girl is never good, ever good at the vet. Our vet doesn't like the dog owner to handle or speak to the dog. My husband had never gone with me to the vet before. The vet told my husband to sit because he was interfering with the treatment. My husband goes easy on our girl whereas I am very authoritative with her. Honestly, I felt like we were at a parent-teacher conference where they say we have an issue because one parent is strict and one isn't.
Our Golden has several hot deep spots which were likely caused by the hiking trip we took. She has a staph infection. The vet and his assistant manhandled her to keep her safe during treatment. Our golden needed to be shaved in spots and her wounds scrubbed. The vet feels that our dog is poorly trained, I discussed with her the issues we have with her. Some of it is my husband and I engage with her very differently. I am very strict and set limits with her. I can put a piece of raw meat on the ground and tell her no dog, she will not touch it. I don't let her in the kitchen, and I don't give her people food. With the exception of the piece of beef on the floor to prove a point about who is the boss. There was one point she was grabbing food off the counter. Whereas, my husband could do the same thing and she would "laugh at him" and then gobble it up. My husband just loves her and he is so easygoing. His take on these dogs doesn't last long and lets them live as free as possible.
I am glad we were finally able to get it in. We have some new feedback about how to get our girl into line. One troublesome behavior is that our dog will flip on her back and bare her teeth at you when you are providing the care she doesn't like. You see this when you are putting her in the bath, the kennel, cutting her nails, and putting meds in her ears. The vet told me to get in her face and yell at her like a drill Sargent. I am not sure that is the answer. It may be time for a trainer when she is well. I am sure that I reinforced her behavior when she was about 4 months because I was bitten by a golden we had for a short time. My father got rid of our dog for biting me. Honestly, it was poor supervision and not the dog's fault. I had dressed the dog in baby clothes and put him in a stroller, I was seven.
So, I will keep being strict with her. It is clear she sees me as the boss. So, it is time to find a trainer to help with this one behavior that troubles me. So, as we get her through this hot spot crisis, she has 4 large ones.
