Bullying Made Me Hate My Body. I Won't Raise My Daughter To Hate Hers.

"I was in third grade when I was bullied about my weight for the first time," opens this thoughtful and honest piece by Katie Garrity. Unfortunately, it wasn't an isolated incident, and it shaped the way she thought about her body for years to come. And she is determined to give her daughter a better path.

She writes: "My daughter is now three years old, and the pressure of how to properly raise her with a healthy body image overwhelms me at times. I know I cannot protect her from the harsh words of kids at school, but I can guide her on how to handle it. I have vowed to take certain measures to make sure I am doing everything I can to help my little girl love her body and be confident in who she is." Read it, and think about how you could take similar steps.

As everybody packs up their school supplies and heads back to the classroom, here's an important perspective from Meg Raby: "It's practically a guarantee there will be neurodivergent children in your kid's class, and they are at risk of being bullied and misunderstood. I'm not trying to be a negative-Nancy here but more of an honest-Olga: Teaching children about autism before school starts is a matter not simply of politeness — but their classmates' wellbeing." She's got some guidance for how to have that convo, too.
