Here's what I've learned about scholarships after doing 4 years of bachelor's in IT in India, 2 years of master's in Applied Computer Science in Germany, and now doing a Ph.D. in Autonomous Vehicles domain. I will come right to the mistakes that you must avoid making while applying or considering yourself to apply for scholarships.
- Be complete: Submit all your documents as requested by the scholarship committee. The incomplete applications are mostly (unless you're lucky, and this is usually not the case) rejected when any document is missing.
- Be aware: Do not only apply for scholarships that are famous and you heard from your friends or family. Go on an active search for small or college or university-oriented (local to college/universities) scholarships that most people do not talk about.
- Keep looking: Keep applying for scholarships even if you have been admitted to a course and you've started your studies. There are multiple different scholarships that aim to financially aid students for 1 or 2 semesters only during their studies.
- Suitable candidate: Do not apply if you (your application) do not fulfill the criteria. You will end up spending time, energy, effort, and maybe money on posting the application and will only get disheartened. Apply to many to have a higher acceptance score does not work here!
- Stick to Quality: Make sure you take a good time of a week to think, write, re-write, and proofread before you submit your cover letter. It is what makes you stand out and this is what represents you. Do not take for granted. This could be the reason you will be selected or rejected.
