Looking at this subject, we can study King David, a man after God's own heart (Acts 13:22), seeing what he has to say about the value of meditating on God's word.
"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does, he prospers." Psalm 1:1-3.
What are some of the blessings of meditation?
Verse 1 speaks of walking, standing and sitting – our choice in these is important.
Verse 2 we look at a person who sits, stands and walks in the Word, having his delight is in the Word, so that he meditates on the Word, day and night. (see also Joshua 1:8)
Verse 3 shows the rewards of a person who mediates on God's Word:
- Has great stability 'like a tree planted by steams of water'
- Has constant access to fresh supplies – 'by steams of water'
- Is productive and fruitful – 'yields fruit in season'
- Understands Godly timing – 'in season'
- Has life continually flowing through every area of their life – 'whose leaf does not wither'
- Prospers in whatever he does
Simply put, this person has stability, fresh supply in God, is productive and fruitful, understands Godly timing, is overflowing with life and prospers in whatever he does. Wow.
Meditating on God's Word helps us bring our Lord and Friend into our circumstances by applying His wisdom and treasures to everyday life. More than just memorizing, we are taking His Word to heart, and gaining a deeper understanding and perspective of God's ways.
May you prosper this week as you meditate on His Word
