1 Kings traces the history of God's people from the heights of glory and prosperity enjoyed during the reign of Solomon, through to the dividing of the kingdoms into northern and southern kingdoms.
Scripture does not record the brief summaries of the reign of these kings merely to satisfy those who have an interest in ancient history. They are include to further the Bibles purpose of benefiting us spiritually.
1 Corinthians 10 verse 11
" Now these things happened to them as examples, and they were written as a warning to us,on whom the end of the ages have come."
2 Timothy 3 verses 16 and 17
V 16 "All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness."
V 17 "so that the man (or woman) of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."
The lessons in the reliability of God's Word, is it inevitably yields yet another, that is the utter folly of ignoring that Word, and rebelling against it.
This is a stark warning to Christians today of the serious consequences of disobedience to God"s Word.
1 Kings is not only a book about human failure, it is also a book about God's sovereign purpose, which cannot be held back by human interference.
In the story of Kings of the northern and southern kingdoms, as in all the Old Testament writings, we see God pointing people to the coming King of whom Solomon in all his splendor was only a faint imperfect picture.
The coming King always refers to Christ Jesus, Emmanuel (God made flesh), God with us. The incarnate word of God.
The Bible does not call Christians (followers of Jesus) to shut themselves of completely from the world. We are to be in the world but not of it.
John 17 verses 15, 16 ,17.
V15 Jesus speaking " I am not praying that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one."
V 16 "They are not of the world, as I am not of the world."
V 17 "Sanctify them by the truth, Your Word is Truth."
In 1 Kings we find God's anger against sin (falling short of the standards God has for our lives)
But because God has justly dealt with sin in the death of Christ on the cross, no penalty remains for the believing sinner.
(We are all sinners, saved by Grace, but still remain sinners)
To those who stubbornly cling to their sins, will have to bear that penalty.
It comes down to this God's anger against our sin was either spent on Christ on the cross, or it will be spent on us in eternity.
1 Kings tells us about some bad kings who lead their people badly into bad practices.
We have a just King, who is the King Of Kings, Our Lord and Our Friend Jesus.
We hope this gives you new excitement as you read 1 Kings.
