Clarence Gilyard Biography
Clarence Darnell Gilyard Jr. was an American professor, actor, and author. He was born on December 24, 1955, and died in November 2022. As an actor, he worked in movies, on TV, and on stage, sometimes under the name Clarence A. Gilyard.
Gilyard was known for his roles as Ben Matlock's (played by Andy Griffith) second private investigator and right-hand man, Conrad McMasters, on the legal drama series Matlock from 1989 to 1993; Pastor Bruce Barnes in the Left Behind movie trilogy; Cordell Walker's (played by Chuck Norris) Texas Ranger partner, James "Jimmy" Trivette, in the 1990s crime drama Walker, Texas Ranger; Theo, the terrorist computer expert in Die Hard; and Lieutenant
Early life and education
Gilyard was born on Christmas Eve, 1955, in Moses Lake, Washington. His parents, Barbara and Clarence Gilyard Sr., were both officers in the U.S. Air Force. Gilyard is the second child out of a total of six. Gilyard's family was from New Orleans, Louisiana, but he spent most of his childhood on Air Force bases in Hawaii, Texas, and Florida. He was mostly raised as a Lutheran, but in the 1990s he became a Catholic.
Gilyard was a young adult when he lived in Rialto, California, a suburb of San Bernardino, and went to Eisenhower High School. He did well in school and graduated in 1974. After that, he spent a year as a cadet at the Air Force Academy before leaving to go to Sterling College. In college, he played football and joined Sigma Chi, which is a group of men who do things together. He also got a tennis scholarship, but he stopped going to school before he finished.
When Gilyard was in high school and still living with his parents, he was interested in women, alcohol, and sometimes drugs.
His parents told him to move out, so he and a friend went to Long Beach, California. He went to California State University, Long Beach, where he studied acting. While he was looking for acting jobs, he worked as a waiter. At California State University, Dominguez Hills, he got his bachelor's degree.
Gilyard worked at a clothing store with his roommate, where he was soon made manager. He left this to sell industrial chemicals for a short time. Gilyard went back to school in 2003 and got his master's degree in theater performance from Southern Methodist University.
