Our project for February's One Gift A Month Challenge is a cute zippy Heart Pouch!
Last Month's Project - the Scrappy Fabric Basket
In case you missed the post, I finished one basket:
Which I promptly decided to keep myself since I like it so much!
Not a good way to fill up the gift box... but not to worry, I cut enough pieces to make another one for the gift box, and I cut some other fabric for another one. I'm chain sewing them at the same time...
I like working in batches. So I'll update you on them later in the month...
Thank you to the others who joined in and already made their baskets ~ and linked up!
Check them out at in the linky from January's One Gift a Month page!
You can join in on making any of the gifts anytime throughout the year and add your link to the linky! Just leave a comment telling me you've linked up, because I don't get notified!
I am thinking I may have to send out some prizes at the end of the year..... what do you think?!
On to February's One Gift A Month Project....
A Heart Shaped Zipper Pouch
I used to be scared of zips.... that is until I found a tutorial to make these cuties:
The tutorial is by Erin Erickson of Dog Under My Desk, and it took away my fear of zips completely!
The only zips I'd worked with before that, were ones to put in dresses, and other types of clothing... and they never sat right... but these circle earbud pouches always turned out well....
Erin also has another tutorial, for a Heart shaped one... I had not tried that one out yet..... but I thought it would be perfect for this month's "One Gift a Month" project! So, I printed out the pattern and got busy!
It is a little bit trickier than the circle pouch, but it still didn't take me too long to sew up.
Erin has a pdf with the pattern in the blog post that you can print out. And the tutorial is quite clear, often referencing the circle one for more clarity.
If you get too confused with the heart tutorial, start by making the circle pouch first... and then you will have two gifts this month for the price of one!!

Some Tips To Keep In Mind
Tip # 1 For making the Heart Shaped Zipper Pouch
I cut all three layers out at once:
However - this does not work for the front of the pouch!
For the front of the pouch you need to reverse the pattern on the lining:
Tip # 2 For making the Heart Shaped Zipper Pouch
Don't forget to add the tab..... ask me how I know this is a good tip.............
Tip # 3 For making the Heart Shaped Zipper Pouch
Don't forget to OPEN THE ZIP when you sew all layers together!!
Otherwise you won't be able to turn it inside out.
Tip # 4 For making the Heart Shaped Zipper Pouch
I used a very narrow seam allowance when top stitching because I like how it looks:
HOWEVER, it does not cover up the inside seams... so if you want to cover them, use a 1/4" wide top stitch.
I think those are all the tips I have for you.... now go forth and makes some cute pouches!!!
One Gift a Month Linky
I will include a linky for each month, just in case you are joining in and want to share your basket with us. Just link to the blog post you've shared your pic in... I will link my blog post with pics of my finished projects as well. The linky will be open all year, so you can link up at any time! If you make more than one, feel free to link up more times!
