I am writing from the United States. For my foreign friends, we have an attitude that you should never give up on anything. We are not quitters. It is not the American way, but I say its okay to give up sometimes.
Time is a commodity that we cannot buy more of. It is finite. We cannot get time back. So I say why waste your time? A person needs to focus on activities and experiences that add value to your life. Is it worth the value of your time?
This is why I say it is okay to quit. I am not saying to quit every time something gets hard. I am saying know when you have exerted yourself enough, you have truly gave it your best effort, and still cannot accomplish the goal then quit.
I am not saying you have quit forever. You quit for a short period of time. The rest from the activity might be what you need to succeed. You might have been exerting your energy in the wrong ways. It might have just been the wrong time to attempt what you were working on. You might not be the reason why it failed in the first place. (Ex. Group Projects in school, relationships)
If you do quit something forever, that is great too. I am very proud of my friends who quit smoking. Those who knew they had a substance abuse problem and successfully quit, amazing. These are prime examples of quitting is the right thing to do.
Yes sometimes quitting is the right thing to do. I always think about opportunity cost. If time is a resource, what is the most beneficial way to use it.? That question can only be answered by you, but when you do have that answer you prioritize what you spend your time on. While I loved being a teaching, I hated being a teacher because it consumed my entire life. I had no time for anything else. Not an exaggeration. I would wake up at 4am get to school at 6am, teach until 3pm, get home around 5pm, eat dinner watch tv and fall asleep before 9pm. No time at all so I quit.
If I am the first to tell you this, I am sorry, but you will not always succeed in life. Shit happens. Just remember it is okay if you have to quit something. It is alright to fail. It is better you find what you love and are best at.
