I have a friend from high school that routinely posts music on Facebook. A posting today took me way back in time. The recording artists were on The Ed Sullivan Show. How's that for orchestrating a timeline that you can probably recall if you, like me, are three days older than dirt? It has been fifty-three years since the show was last broadcast for the first time.
Our family routinely watched The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights. Of course, we did. That was when the show was scheduled. Before television, Ed Sullivan had been a syndicated newspaper columnist that also hosted two radio shows. Trust me, he wasn't an entertainer, but he was not in short supply of people who could sing or dance. A typical show included a variety of entertainment.
This morning the musical selection my friend posted was from a segment on The Ed Sullivan Show. He made this introduction:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, the current sensations in the recording field are two youngsters, Sonny and Cher. Now Sonny's name is actually Salvatori Bono. He graduated from Inglewood High School, out here. His stunning young wife, Cher Bono graduated from Mont Clair Prep-School out in the valley of Tarzana.
"Within the past few months they have amazed everyone in show business by recording five records in the top 50 and two albums which is just incredible. It is a pleasure to introduce Sonny and Cher."
They looked like high school age kids. They sang "I Got You Babe". It was written by Sonny. Maybe you remember the lyrics:
They say we're young and we don't know
We won't find out until we grow
Well I don't know if all that's true
'Cause you got me, and baby I got you
Babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
They say our love won't pay the rent
Before it's earned, our money's all been spent
I guess that's so, we don't have a plot
But at least I'm sure of all the things we got
Babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got flowers in the spring
I got you to wear my ring
And when I'm sad, you're a clown
And if I get scared, you're always around
Don't let them say your hair's too long
'Cause I don't care, with you I can't go wrong
Then put your little hand in mine
There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb
Babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you to hold my hand
I got you to understand
I got you to walk with me
I got you to talk with me
I got you to kiss goodnight
I got you to hold me tight
I got you, I won't let go
I got you to love me so
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
"I've got you and you've got me" sums one of the key ingredients to quality of life issues. When God created the world and everything in it, he made the observation that "It is not good for man to be alone."
We are created for relationships, and we are created for community. It was the man of wisdom wrote: "Two are better than one; they have a good return for their labor. People need people!
Since we all have that same need, you'd think that enjoyment and fulfillment is available for all. It virtually is, but somehow we often place our priorities elsewhere. We miss shared time with others because we are simply too busy.
Our hurried lives are filled with much, but friend formation and relationship building don't rank high on many of the "To Do Lists" we create for ourselves. We've got to change that.

All The Best!
